    • A hollow pedestal bed end for a rise and fall patient's bed is made of reduced width to fold over the mattress frame and pass through a door opening. The inner faces of the paired bed ends each have a slot through which a mattress frame bracket projects. A wheeled carriage inside the bed end rides on an upright guide and the bracket projects from the guide. The rise and fall motion is supplied by a linear actuator whose small movements are multiplied by a third order lever. The frame is thus lifted by a pair of such pedestal ends.

    • A process for sorting large files or structures is disclosed where improved performance is achieved by reducing the work involved and the time required to do record key comparisons. The reduction is achieved by transposing and saving the key data from each record into a representative form that can be more quickly compared each time the key comparison is required. In addition the process uses pointers to avoid the processing time to exchange records larger than one word in memory. The representation of the key data is optimized and aligned for comparison by word based computer instructions which are typically faster than byte based instructions. The process is optimized for word sizes and instructions which handle words larger than four bytes and in particular for machines and instructions with 64-bit or larger word sizes such as the Intel Itanium series processors.

    • A positioning system or synthetic phase processor or rover station for providing high integrity positions with graduated accuracies. The positioning system includes one or more real time kinematic (RTK) reference stations for receiving GPS signals at established reference positions and measuring reference phases. The positioning system or the rover station selects a synthetic offset vector and uses the synthetic offset vector for inferring synthetic reference phases to a synthetic position. The rover station uses the synthetic reference phases with actual or virtual reference positions for determining a rover position having an added positional error controlled by the synthetic offset vector. For another embodiment a secure rover station dithers a secure position with a synthetic offset vector for providing an unsecure rover position having the added positional error.

    • The present invention relates to photonic crystal fibers, in particular to photonic crystal fibers that guide light by virtue of a photonic band gap. It is an object of the present invention to provide such fibers that are formed from materials having higher refractive indices than silica. The object is achieved by an elongate waveguide comprising a core with a relatively low refractive index and a photonic band gap structure that can substantially confine light to the core, the structure comprising elongate regions of relatively low refractive index interspersed with elongate regions of relatively high refractive index wherein the band gap resides above the fifth photonic band of the band gap structure. Alternatively the photonic band gap may have a V0-value in the range 130≦V02≦160. Alternatively the waveguide has a lattice pitch Λ and the elongate regions have a transverse dimension d, wherein the photonic band gap has a normalized centre frequency k0Λ in the range 5≦k0Λ≦6, when d/Λ=0.8 and the refractive index contrast is 2.4, or a normalized centre frequency k0Λ of the same photonic band gap that is scaled with either or both of d/Λ and the refractive index contrast between the relatively high index and the relatively low refractive index. The invention further relates to a method of operating the waveguides and to their use. The present invention may facilitate long distance transmission at higher than usual wavelengths.
