    • A catheter system and method are described for stenting a vessel at a bifurcation or sidebranch of the vessel. The catheter system includes a first balloon catheter, a second balloon catheter and a releasable linking device for holding the first and second balloon catheters arranged in a side-by-side configuration and aligned with one another along a longitudinal axis. The linking device allows the catheter system to be advanced as a unit and helps prevent premature or inadvertent dislodgement of the stent from the catheters, yet is releasable so that one or both of the balloon catheters can be released from the linking device and maneuvered separately from the rest of the catheter system when desired. The method utilizes the described catheter system for stenting bifurcated vessels using a modified “kissing balloons” technique.

    • A radiation protection device attaches to the C-arm of a fluoroscope and shields and collimates the X-ray beam between the X-ray source and the patient and between the patient and the image intensifier. One embodiment has a radiation shield of X-ray opaque material that surrounds the C-arm of the fluoroscopy system, the X-ray source and the image intensifier. A padded slot fits around the patient's body. Another embodiment has conical or cylindrical radiation shields that extend between the X-ray source and the patient and between the patient and the image intensifier. The radiation shields have length adjustments and padded ends to fit the device to the patient. The radiation protection device may be motorized to advance and withdraw the radiation shields. A blanket-like radiation shield covers the patient in the area surrounding where the X-ray beam enters the body.

    • A perfusion shunt apparatus and methods are described for isolating and selectively perfusing a segment of a patient's cardiovascular system and for directing circulatory flow around the isolated segment. An aortic perfusion shunt apparatus is configured for deployment within a patient's aortic arch and methods are described for isolating the aortic arch vessels from the aortic lumen, for selectively perfusing the arch vessels with a fluid and for directing blood flow within the aortic lumen through a shunt past the isolated arch vessels. The perfusion shunt apparatus may be mounted on a catheter or cannula for percutaneous introduction or for direct insertion into a circulatory vessel, such as the aorta. The perfusion shunt apparatus has application for protecting a patient from embolic stroke or hypoperfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass or cardiac surgery and also for selectively perfusing the cerebrovascular circulation with oxygenated blood or with neuroprotective fluids in the presence of risk factors, such as head trauma or cardiac insufficiency. The perfusion shunt apparatus will also find application for selective perfusion of other organ systems within the body.
