    • A method comprising (a) synthesis of a poly(arylene ether) having the structure (1) wherein m is an integer having an average value in the range from about 3 to about 300; (b) solution functionalization of polymer (1) to form functionalized poly(arylene ether) having the structure (2) wherein X is a reactive functional group selected from the group consisting of anhydride, hydroxyl, epoxy, carboxyl, —R1OH, R1CO2R2, —R1CH2═CH2, or vinyl, wherein R1 is a primary or secondary divalent alkyl or haloalky group having from 1 to 20 carbons, or an aryl group and R2 is a primary or secondary alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbons; and Q4 is hydrogen, X, or a mixture thereof; (c) reaction of functionalized poly(arylene ether) (2) with a poly(organosiloxane) having structure (3): wherein x is zero or one and Y is a functional group reactive with X, selected from the group consisting of —OH, —CH2═CH2, epoxy, amino, carboxy, —C(O)CH2OH, or hydrogen, to form a poly(arylene ether)-poly(siloxane) copolymer, wherein the functionalization is in solution, and copolymer synthesis and isolation are effected by first solution and then melt copolymerization.

    • The invention relates to methods of capping poly(phenylene ether) resin having an intrinsic viscosity between 0.05 and 0.35 dl/g. More particularly, the methods comprise capping a poly(phenylene ether) resin having an intrinsic viscosity between 0.05 and 0.35 dl/g in a solvent to produce a capped poly(phenylene ether) resin having an intrinsic viscosity between 0.05 and 0.35 dl/g and isolating the capped poly(phenylene ether) resin by removal of the solvent, preferably in a process other than precipitation. The invention also relates to the capped poly(phenylene ether) resin having an intrinsic viscosity between 0.05 and 0.35 dl/g.

    • The present invention deals with the distribution of polyphenylene ethers 1. by reacting the polyphenylene ether in solution with a phenolic compound, wherein special phenolic compounds are used. The redistribution reaction can be performed in toluene or in toluene/alcohol blends. The reaction can be run in the presence or the absence of a catalyst. By using a process for the redistribution of polyphenylene ethers by reacting the polyphenylene ether in solution with a phenolic compound, wherein the polyphenylene ether is reacted with a phenolic compound with formula 3 wherein the phenolic rings are disubstituted with methyl groups or ethyl groups in the ortho positions and the group X is separated from the phenolic ring through at least two carbon atoms and the phenolic compound has a molecular weight of not more than 400 g/mol, preferably not more than 300 g/mol and the redistribution is performed in a mixture of toluene and methanol with 1-30 volume % of methanol or in toluene in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst such as tri (C8-C1O alkyl) methyl ammonium chloride as a promoter; and a diphenoquinone, preferably of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-diphenoquinone is used as a catalyst and the molar concentration of the phenolic compound is chosen between 0.9 to 1.1 times the molar quantity of monomeric units in the polyphenylene ether in the reaction solution, more than 90% of the phenolic compound can be incorporated in the polyphenylene.
