    • A load handler with a modular frame and the manufacture and assembly of the frame and loader and components that may be used therein. A frame is provided that has a low pivot point for a boom that may be lowered to a position within the frame. The frame has left and right side rails, and front and rear cross rails, each having a closed cross-section construction. The side rails and cross rails are modular and the cross rails of a selected size are configured to fit a plurality of sizes of side rails, such that the same size cross rails may be used to construct a variety sizes and capabilities of load handling vehicles in a flow type manufacturing process. A structural beam is provided having plates interconnected along their lengths to form the beam having a box-shaped closed cross-section having a perimeter generally along the widths of the plates and forming a beam cavity within the perimeter. A first plate has a width greater than the width of an opposed second plate, and the plates are positioned to form a plurality of welding land inside corners along the length of the beam. A corresponding weld is formed simultaneously with a single pass at all of the welding land inside corners along the lengths thereof to interconnect the plates to form the structural beam.

    • This invention relates to the handling of freight in cargo containerization and arrangements for coupling containers and hoisting equipment, and particularly to a side latch interconnect apparatus and method for expediting the interaction of hoisting equipment with containers and making such equipment more reliable. More particularly, that which is disclosed is a handle for mounting on a container for use with a releasable latch mechanism having: an integral body including a substantially vertical member having an outwardly facing surface having a lower engagable portion having a lower engagement surface; the outwardly facing surface facing outwardly away from the substantially vertical member and including side target area for releasably receiving a portion of a latch mechanism from a side in a substantially inwardly direction with respect to the substantially vertical member defined by a recess; and the side target area being generally centrally located on the outwardly facing surface including a plurality of communicating boundaries, including: (i) an upper boundary defined by the lower engagement surface; (ii) a base section of the recess; and (iii) side boundaries defined by side sections, and the boundaries being located substantially within the substantially vertical member of the body, thereby facilitating handling from the side.

    • An apparatus for lifting truck trailers and cargo containers is provided and includes a plurality of latch arm assemblies. A side fitting connection device is secured at four predetermined locations on external upper side locations of a trailer or a container. Each interlocking latch arm assembly includes a complementary shaped projection member adaptable to engage with and be secured to each side fitting device. The side fitting connection device and latch arm assembly, when connected and engaged together, permit top side lifting of trailers and containers for intermodal movement thereof. The external upper side locations of the side fitting device permit full, complete and more profitable usage of the internal space or volume of truck trailers or cargo containers.

    • A crane and lift apparatus for controlling the lifting and lowering of large cargo containers. A trolley assembly includes a hoist drum from which is suspended a system of cable or rope reevings connected to material securing assembly. The apparatus is effective to unload containers stacked one above another from one location to an alternate location. The system of cable reevings permits the raising and lowering of containers in planes defined by X, Y, and Z axes. The cables are deployed from the hoist drum on the trolley assembly to sheaves disposed at the four corners of the material securing assembly and then returned to anchor assemblies secured to an undercarriage of the trolley assembly. The sheaves are selectively angled and located in headblock assemblies positioned on the material securing assembly. A system of brakes controls movement of the cables through the sheaves. By selectively combining the angling of the sheaves with selective application of the sheave brakes, it is possible to resolve moment forces acting at each corner of a container so as to abosrb the constantly changing inertial movements that occur when the container is raised, lowered or moved horizontally. As a result, the apparatus is effective to dampen or retard the container from swaying, rolling, or pitching, from pendulous movement, and can thereby control the deployment of the container within precise vertical, horizontal, or skewed planes of orientation.
