    • Defects in an image forming system may give rise to visible streaks, or one-dimensional defects in an image that run parallel to the process direction. One known method for compensating for streaks introduces a separate tone reproduction curve for each pixel column in the process direction. A compensation pattern according to this invention has a plurality of halftone regions that are lead by, trained by, and separated by rows of fiducial marks. The fiducial marks allow the printer pixel grid and a scanning pixel grid to be correlated. The gray level in each pixel column of each gray level portion is measured and analyzed to produce a local tone reproduction curve for each pixel column and associated line width. The local tone reproduction curves are then used to compensate for the streak defect when printing.

    • A system suited to scheduling print jobs for a printing system includes a first processing component which identifies preliminary attributes of print jobs to be printed on sheets. A job scheduler receives the preliminary attributes and assigns each of the print jobs to one of a plurality of job queues in time order for printing. Print jobs spanning the same time are scheduled for printing contemporaneously. In one mode of operation, the assignment of the print jobs to the job queues is based on their preliminary attributes and on the application of at least one constraint which affects contemporaneous printing of at least two of the plurality of print jobs. A second processing component identifies detailed attributes of the print jobs. A sheet scheduler receives information on the assignments of the print jobs and their detailed attributes and forms an itinerary for each sheet to be printed.

    • A system includes at least first and second marking modules, each of the marking modules including a marking engine and at least one media feeder which feeds print media to the marking engines. First and second output modules receive print media from the first and second marking modules. The first and second output modules each include a finisher. At least one print media network selectively conveys print media between each of the marking modules and each of the output modules. The first and second output modules each include a portion of the print media network, the portion extending between an inlet interface and an outlet interface of the module.

    • Methods and apparatus for performing addressable fusing and/or heating of a substrate undergoing xerographic processing are disclosed. The apparatus includes a fuser having an array of addressable heating elements in radiative communication with a substrate through a fuser roll or fuser belt. The array of addressable heating elements is operated to selectively heat portions of the substrate to achieve a desired effect on the substrate, such as changing its surface finish, or fusing unfused toner to the substrate. In the case of toner fusing, the array is operated such that substantially only an area covered by the unfused toner is heated. This eliminates the need for blanket fusing, and generally provides for greater flexibility in xerographically processing substrates. Apparatus and methods for performing two-sided selective fusing and/or heating are also disclosed.

    • A printing system includes a monochrome marking engine for printing monochrome images and a color marking engine which can print both color and monochrome images. A previewer identifies attributes of the print job, for example, for each page, identifying any monochrome and color images. A user interface enables a user to select a print mode for the print job from a plurality of print modes. A scheduler is responsive to the previewer and the user interface for assigning pages of the print job among the marking engines based on the attributes of the print job and the user-selected print mode. A marking engine controller is in communication with the scheduler for controlling the at least one monochrome marking engine to render pages of the print job assigned thereto and for controlling the at least one color marking engine to render pages of the print job assigned thereto.
