    • A wheel bearing device is proposed which maintains long life even under high-load, high-temperature conditions. On the surfaces of inner rings and tapered rollers of a multiple-row tapered roller bearing rotatably supporting a wheel, carburized, nitrided layers are formed which contain 0.80 wt % or more carbon and have a Rockwell hardness of 58 or over with the residual aaustenite content being 25-35 vol % to improve mechanical properties and fatigue characteristics of these parts and also keep the surface layers of these parts of suitable toughness, thereby improving the life of the wheel bearing device in a high-load, high-temperature environment. Also, an annular recess is formed in the inner periphery of the outer ring at a portion between the rows of the raceways.

    • A wheel bearing apparatus incorporating a wheel speed detecting apparatus has an outer member (4) with an integrally formed body mounting flange (4b) and double row outer raceway surfaces (4a) formed on the inner circumferential surface of the outer member (4). An inner member (3) includes a wheel hub (1) with an integrally formed wheel mounting flange (7) at one end. A cylindrical portion (1b) axially extends from the wheel mounting flange (7). An inner ring (6) is fitted on the cylindrical portion (1b) of the wheel hub (1). Double row inner raceway surfaces (1a, 6a) are formed on the outer circumferential surfaces of the wheel hub (1) and inner ring (6), respectively opposite to the double row outer raceway surfaces (4a). Double row rolling elements (5) are rotatably arranged between the outer and inner raceway surfaces (4a; 1a, 6a). An encoder (19) is mounted on the outer circumferential surface of the inner ring (6). An annular sensor holder (15) is arranged on the end of the outer member (4) opposite to the encoder (19). A wheel speed detecting sensor (20) is integrally molded with the sensor holder (15) and arranged opposite to the encoder (19), via a predetermined radial gap. The encoder (19) has an annular ring configuration and its characteristics alternately and equidistantly vary along its circumferential direction. A seal is arranged at the inboard side of the encoder (19). The seal includes first and second annular sealing plates (21, 22) mounted on the sensor holder (15) and the inner ring (6), respectively, and opposite toward each other. The encoder (19) is mounted on the second sealing plate (22).

    • To provide a wheel support bearing assembly coupled with the knuckle of a type made of an aluminum alloy, in which an undesirable occurrence of electrocorrosion resulting from a galvanic cell developed at a surface area where the wheel support bearing assembly contacts the aluminum alloy knuckle is substantially eliminated, a wheel support bearing assembly is provided with an outer member (1) having an inner peripheral surface formed with raceways (4), an inner member (2) having raceways (5) defined therein in alignment with the raceways (4) in the outer member (1), and rows of rolling elements (3) positioned between the raceways (4 and 5) in the outer and inner members (1 and 2), respectively. The outer peripheral surface of the outer member (1) is formed with a vehicle body fitting flange (1a) for securement of the wheel support bearing assembly to a knuckle (14) made of an aluminum alloy and the outer peripheral surface of the inner member (2) is formed with a wheel mounting flange (2a) for the support of a vehicle wheel. An electrically insulating layer (17) is provided at a surface area of contact between the outer member (1) and the knuckle (14), that is, on a portion of the outer peripheral surface of the outer member (1) that is received in a bearing bore (14a) of the knuckle (14) and one of axial end faces of the vehicle body fitting flange (1a).
