    • An integrated gimbal suspension includes a flexure with an integrated, built-in gimbal, and includes a limiter structure that constrains motions of the gimbal in multi-degrees of freedom. The limiter structure includes one or more tab-shaped limiters and corresponding stops integrally formed into the gimbal assembly at strategic locations, which interact to provide the desired constraints to the motions of the flexure gimbal to prevent permanent damage from over-straining the gimbal or flexure beyond its designed range. The limiters may be pre-formed tab-shaped structures that are bent from the plane of the flexure. As the gimbal moves from its nominal position, one or more limiters engage the stops before such motion reaches the limit of the designed range of motion of the gimbal.

    • An integrated suspension for a hard disk drive is formed as a single-piece flat assembly. The design eliminates the need for mechanical reinforcement such as flange forming, and requires no additional weld processing to form the functional portion of the assembly. A partial etch process is used to reduce local thicknesses in the gimbal and hinge areas to reduce the overall stiffness of the suspension. The proximal end structure of the suspension is also built by partial etching to achieve higher natural frequencies. The suspension design also incorporates built-in load/unload features and two-sided, opposite-facing limiters to limit excessive slider displacement during the manufacturing process, loading/unloading, and non-operational shock environments.

    • There is provided a head gimbal assembly (HGA) for a disk drive. The HGA includes a slider and a flexure. The flexure includes a flexure body portion, a tongue portion with the slider affixed to the tongue portion, first and second gimbal arms extending between the flexure body portion and the tongue portion, and a dielectric layer including a first dielectric layer segment extending continuously along the first gimbal arm between the flexure body portion and the tongue portion. The flexure further includes a first patterned conductive trace electrically connected to the slider. The first patterned conductive trace is supported by the first dielectric layer segment. The first dielectric layer segment crosses and re-crosses the first patterned conductive trace along the first gimbal arm without overlying the first gimbal arm.

    • A disk drive suspension assembly has a laminated flexure that includes a structural layer, first and second conductive layers, a first dielectric layer disposed between the structural layer and the first conductive layer, and a second dielectric layer disposed between the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer. The first conductive layer includes at least a first conductive trace and a second conductive trace, and the second conductive layer includes at least a third conductive trace and a fourth conductive trace. The first conductive trace is electrically connected to the fourth conductive trace by a first conductive via through the second dielectric layer, and the second conductive trace is electrically connected to the third conductive trace through a second conductive via through the second dielectric layer.     • A novel head gimbal assembly (HGA) for use in a disk drive is disclosed. Each of a plurality of electrically conductive traces of a flexure of the HGA includes a connection region that is aligned with and connected to a corresponding one of a plurality of electrically conductive bonding pads of a head. Each of the plurality of electrically conductive traces further includes a heating pad that is offset from its connection region by an offset distance. A dielectric layer of the flexure includes a first opening over the heating pad, a support layer of the flexure includes a second opening over the heating pad, and a load beam of the HGA includes a third opening disposed over the heating pad. During assembly, light may be shined through the openings and onto the heating pad until solder located in the connection region that is offset from the heating pad melts.
