    • A mechanical supercharger of an internal combustion engine has a housing formed with inlet and outlet ports and a pair of spiral screws rotatably received in the housing for partially compressing air introduced in the mechanical supercharger and carrying it from the inlet port to the outlet port. The supercharger is disposed after a throttle valve in an intake system of the engine, and is provided with a relief port allowing compressed air to be relieved from the supercharger. The relief port is formed in the housing between the inlet and outlet ports where air is compressed to allow compressed air to be relieved. A relief valve is controlled to variably open according to engine operating conditions and relieve compressed air in the supercharger.

    • A valve drive device for an engine include a valve for opening or closing an opening of a port to a combustion chamber, a valve drive member for opening or closing the valve and a drive shaft for driving the valve drive member. The device also includes a variable valve timing mechanism for continuously changing a working angle of the valve corresponding to an operation state of the engine by changing a state of drive force transmission from the drive shaft to the valve drive member. A variable valve clearance mechanism is configured such that a valve clearance that is defined as a gap between the valve and the valve drive member can be set at a first value during a first condition in which the working angle of the valve is large to a second different value during a second condition in which the working angle of the valve is small.

    • An intake system includes two surge tanks for cylinders in first and second cylinder banks of a V-type internal combustion engine which are arranged side by side over one of the first and second cylinder banks in the lengthwise direction of its associated engine and, are preferably formed as one unit and includes intake passages arranged in series in the lengthwise direction, each intake pipe connecting the surge tank with each of the cylinders in the first and second cylinder banks. The outermost intake passages disposed at the opposite ends of the surge tanks extend outward of the surge tanks in the opposite directions and are bent back into a space between the first and second cylinder banks. The remaining intake passages for the cylinders in the first cylinder bank are of C-shaped passage and the remaining intake passages for the cylinders in the second cylinder bank cross inside the C-shaped intake pipes in the space.
