    • The present invention is directed to a performance data editing system embodied within a computer system (or electronic musical instrument) equipped with a display and a mouse. The present invention provides a score window containing various types of execution icon layers onto which execution ions representing exection-related data for adding articulation to a music tone are attached and arranged in conformity with a progression of a musical tune on a screen of the display. Each layer can be controlled in response to various commands. The present invention further allows a user (or music editor) to select desired execution icons from an icon select palette that provides lists of execution icons which are registered in advance. In addition, the present invention allows a user to modify parameters of a specific icon, as well as add icons to or delete icons from a prescribed display area (e.g., layer window) using drag-and-drop operations.

    • A performance data editing system is actualized by a computer system (or electronic musical instrument) which is equipped with a display and a mouse. The system initially provides a score window containing various types of execution icon layers onto which execution icons (representing musical symbols such as bend-up/down, grace-up/down, dynamics, glissando, tremolo) are attached and arranged in conformity with a progression of a musical tune on a screen of the display. Each of the layers is independently controlled in response to various commands such as display-on, small-scale display, display-off and vertical rearrangement. The system allows a user (or music editor) to select desired execution icons from an icon select palette that provides lists of execution icons which are registered in advance. In addition, the system also allows the user to modify parameters of a specific icon which is selected from among the execution icons attached onto the score window. That is, the user opens an icon modify window to change parameters of the specific icon with the mouse. Further, the system provides the user with a simple operation for deletion of execution-related data from performance data. That is, when the user performs drag-and-drop operations on a certain execution icon to move it outside of a prescribed display area (e.g., layer window) of the score window, the system automatically deletes the corresponding execution-related data from the performance data. Thus, it is possible to improve performability and efficiency in editing performance data by using icons with simple operations and without errors.

    • The present invention is directed to a system and method for providing a score window containing various types of execution icon layers onto which execution icons are attached and arranged in conformity with a progression of a musical tune on a screen of the display. In accordance with the preferred embodiment, each layer is controlled in response to various display commands. The system allows a user to select desired execution icons from an icon select palette that provides lists of execution icons which are registered in advance. Specifically, the user may select and “drag” an execution icon from the palette and place it at a position in correspondence with a particular point of progression of the music to be edited, causing the editing function corresponding to the execution icon to be effected at the point of progression of the musical piece. In accordance with the preferred embodiment, the execution icons are displayed by categories in accordance with a category display layer, which may be controlled to be displayed or not displayed in the editing screen.

The system also provides an icon select palette that shows latest selections of execution icons which are arranged in an up-to-date manner. The icon select palette shows a number of execution icons which the user frequently or lastly use. Thus, it is possible to improve performability and efficiency in editing performance data by using icons with simple operations and without errors.

    • A method of generating musical tones and a storage medium storing a program for executing the method are provided. Musical piece data is decomposed into phrases, the musical piece data being formed of pieces of performance data arranged in the order of performance. The pieces of performance data of the musical piece data are analyzed for each of the phrases obtained by the decomposing step. Tone color control data is prepared for each of the phrases according to results of the analyzing. The pieces of performance data of the musical piece data are reproduced by sequentially reading the pieces of performance data at timing at which the pieces of performance data are to be performed to the order of performance. Tone color characteristics of musical tones to be generated based on selected ones of the pieces of performance data which are reproduced by the reproducing step, are controlled according to the tone color control data prepared for ones of the phrases to which the selected ones of the pieces of performance data belong, respectively.

    • A musical tone control apparatus includes at least one stick to be held by a person's hand and at least one detector to be attached to a person's leg. The stick and detector are respectively equipped with sensors each detecting a physical parameter accompanied with a spatial displacement thereof. Preferably, the sensor is constructed by an acceleration sensor for detecting an acceleration as the physical parameter. Based on detection results of the sensors, a generation of a muscial tone is controlled when the stick and detector are swung with the swinging motions of the person's arm and leg. In addition, a switch is provided to the stick, by which a tone color of the musical tone to be generated is controlled in response to an operation of this switch.     • Musical instruments usually require a high level of skill on the part of the operator. In the case of electronic instruments, playing an instrument often involves the depressing of keys on a keyboard. In the present invention, an apparatus for the generation of musical sounds is described which is instead based on monitoring motions of the body, especially the natural motion of swinging the arms and legs. The monitoring of body motion depends on the use of an acceleration sensor in a hand-held element, or on the use of an acceleration sensor contained in a detachable housing which is held by a "Velcro" (Trademark) type fastener to a part of the body. The signal from the acceleration sensor is transmitted via a cable or a wireless transmitter to a musical tone signal generating circuit which is contained, along with batteries, in a belt-shaped casing which may be worn by the user. The musical tone generating circuit receives signals from the acceleration sensor, and using the musical tone color information stored in its memory, produces the appropriate output signal. Therefore, musical tones can be generated simply by moving a monitored part of the body, without the actions usually required to play an electronic musical instrument.
