    • Provided is a gas sensor in which a connection terminal can be favorably fitted onto a cylindrical sensor element without causing a breakage of the connection terminal. An oxygen sensor (1) includes an outer connection terminal (29) having an outer fitting portion (53), an extension portion (55) extending inwardly from an axially intermediate point of the outer fitting portion (53) and pulling prevention portions (75) and (77) formed on rear end parts of the outer fitting portion (53) at positions adjacent to the extension portion (55). When the extension portion (55) of the outer connection terminal (29) is inserted in and pulled out from a through hole (23) of a separator (27), the extension portion (55) can be prevented from further pulling in the through hole (23) by contact of the pulling prevention portions (75) and (77) with a front end surface of the separator (27).

    • A detecting element (10) of a gas sensor (1) is held with a detecting portion (11) projecting from a front-end engaging-portion (56) of a metallic shell (50) and is accommodated for protection in an inner protector (120) in a gas detection chamber (129). Exhaust gas introduced into the gas detection chamber (129) is exhausted through an exhaust hole (160). The exhaust hole is formed by cutting off a portion of a side wall (127) of a recess portion (125), which is formed by pressing inward a portion between two slits formed in a front end wall (124). A bottom wall (126) of the recess portion (125) is located frontward of the detecting element (10) with respect to the direction of an axis O, thereby preventing a water droplet which comes flying from the outside from directly contacting the detecting element (10).

    • To provide a gas sensor in which connection terminals are stably brought into contact with electrode terminal portions of a sensor element without superfluous load applied on the sensor element. A pair of element guide portions 33 are provided in a sleeve 30 in which a plate-like sensor element 10 is inserted. The pair of element guide portions 33 protrude from an opening end surface on a rear end side of an axial hole 31, store either of widthwise opposite side ends of the sensor element 10 and restrain the sensor element 10 from being inclined. The sensor element 10 is positioned coaxially with the sleeve 30 by the element guide portions 33. Electrode holders 40 in which electrode fitments 60 are held are fitted to the element guide portions 33 so that the electrode fitments 60 are brought into contact with electrode terminal portions 15 and 16 of the sensor element 10. Because the positional relation between the two is decided on the basis of the element guide portions 33, there is no superfluous load applied on the sensor element 10, so that the sensor element 10 is prevented from being broken. In addition, pressure of contact of the electrode fitments 60 with the electrode terminal portions 15 and 16 of the sensor element 10 is kept substantially constant, so that electrically stable connection can be obtained.

    • A process for preparing polymers having quaternary ammonium groups comprising polymerizing a vinyl monomer component containing a vinyl monomer having a tertiary amino group in the presence of a specific solvent, while quaternizing the tertiary amino group with a quaternizing agent, to produce the vinyl polymers having quaternary ammonium groups in the form of particles dispersed in the solvent, which is possible to easily separate the produced polymers having quaternary ammonium groups from the solvent without requiring a heating step for removing the solvent, and which can produce quaternary ammonium group-containing copolymers having a high content of a hydrophobic vinyl monomer. The quaternary ammonium group-containing copolymers obtained by this process are useful as modifier for plastics, permanent antistatic agent, bactericide or fungicide, chemicals for paper making and water treating agent.
