    • An inclined leg press machine includes: a frame that includes a base configured to rest on an underlying surface and a pair of inclined guides; a seat assembly attached to the frame; a weight sled slidably engaged with the guides along a travel path that is substantially parallel with the guides, the weight sled operatively coupled with a resistance source; and a foot platform assembly movable with the weight sled, the foot platform assembly having a foot platform that receives the feet of an exerciser. The weight sled is movable along the travel path between flexed and extended positions. The foot platform rotates relative to the underlying surface as the weight sled moves between the flexed and extended positions so that, when the exerciser's feet are placed flat on the foot platform, the exerciser's feet and tibiae are maintained at an angle of approximately ninety degrees.

    • A multi-functional handle assembly for an exercise machine includes: a strap arranged in a Figure-8 configuration to form a near loop and a far loop extending in generally opposite directions from a crossing point in the strap; a handle having a cavity formed therethrough, wherein the near loop extends to the near side of the handle and the far loop extends from the far side of the handle, the crossing point of the strap positioned in the cavity; a cushioning cuff attached to the far loop; a bearing member having a slot, wherein portions of the near loop are threaded through the slot, such that the bearing member is slidable relative to the portions of the near loop; and means for attaching the handle assembly to the exercise machine, the means for attaching the handle assembly being attached to the near loop. The handle can be drawn between the bearing member and the cushioning cuff, the strap sliding within the handle, such that the near loop and the far loop change in size with sliding of the handle. Movement of the handle and the bearing member can enable the handle assembly to be used with upper body, triceps extension, and leg/hip exercises.

The vertical stack is formed by alternating first and second weight. The post is configured to connect with a movement arm of an exercise machine and includes a first column of apertures that align with the slots of the first set of weights and a second column of apertures that align with the second set of weights. The selector unit is configured to be inserted into one of the slots and one of the apertures to select a portion of the weights to provide resistance for exercise.

    • A leg press exercise machine comprises: a frame; a seat unit attached to the frame; a press mechanism attached to the frame, the press mechanism including a foot panel and at least one swing link pivotally interconnected with the frame; a resistance-imparting unit operatively connected with the press mechanism; and a resistance coupling mechanism attached to the press mechanism and the resistance-imparting unit. The press mechanism is configured such that the foot panel is movable along a generally longitudinal stroke path between a retracted position and a fully extended position. The resistance-imparting unit provides resistance to the foot panel as it moves from the retracted position to the fully extended position. The resistance coupling mechanism includes a drawing link pivotally interconnected with the swing link and a control link pivotally interconnected with the drawing link and the press mechanism. The control link is further attached to the resistance-imparting unit.

    • An exercise apparatus has an auxiliary weight system which can be used with virtually any exercise machine irrespective of its stroke length and which is relatively free of resistance due to friction caused by the interaction of the weights and their guide rods. The exercise apparatus of the present invention includes: a frame; an exercise arm attached to and movable relative to the frame; a set of first weights, each of which is of a first magnitude; a first moving unit for moving at least one of the set of first weights along a first path; a set of second weights, each of which is of a second magnitude that differs from the first magnitude; a second moving unit for moving at least one of the set of second weights along a second path that is noncoincident with the first path; and an interconnecting assembly for interconnecting the first and second moving units with the exercise arm such that movement of the exercise arm draws at least one of the first set of weights and at least one of the second set of weights along, respectively, the first and second paths.

    • An exercise apparatus includes a frame, user actuation components connected to the frame for being engaged and moved by a user during an exercise, and a rheological fluid brake operatively connected to the user actuation components for applying a controllable resistance to movement thereof. The rheological fluid brake includes a rheological fluid having a controllable viscosity, a housing connected to the frame and containing the rheological fluid, and a rotatable shaft extending outwardly from the housing and connected between the rheological fluid and the user actuation components. A flywheel is also preferably connected to the rotatable shaft to further smooth action of the brake. A controller, such as a microprocessor operating under stored program control, is preferably operatively connected to the rheological fluid brake for causing a predetermined field strength to be applied to the rheological fluid based upon a user-selected resistance value. In one embodiment, the rheological fluid is a magnetorheological fluid and in another embodiment, the fluid is a electrorheological fluid. A stair stepper, exercise bicycle and treadmill incorporating the rheological brake are disclosed.
