    • A passive-type mine roof bolt is constructed of multi strand steel cable. The bolt head is constructed of a hexagonal- or other drive-headed collar having an internally tapered funnel-shaped bore therethrough, and a tapered plug having a frusto-conical outer surface that engages the funnel-shaped inner surface of the drive collar. The tapered plug has an internal bore essentially concentric with the outer frusto-conical surface, and is adapted to fit over the steel cable, the hexagonal head drive collar fitting over the tapered plug such that pressing the tapered plug and steel cable into the inner funnel-shaped bore of the hexagonal-head drive collar causes serrations on the internal bore of the tapered plug to be urged down against, and bite into, the steel cable, resulting in a rigid hexagonal head for the cable bolt. The tapered plug is in actuality, a pair of essentially identical diametrically opposed semi-frusto-conical tapered sections that more easily compress together to bite into the multi-strand steel cable. A number of alternative embodiments enhance the bolt's retention strength in the bore hole to aid in stabilizing the rock formation.

    • An anchored cable sling system stabilizies and supports the rock formation above a mine tunnel roof. The system comprises a unitary multi-strand cable having a series of anchor collars on each end. The anchor collars include radially extending wings that: (1) cut and shread the resin grout material cartridges, (2) mix the resin grout material as the cable end is being inserted into the mine tunnel roof bore hole, and (3) center the anchor collars and cable in the bore hole. The anchor collars are oriented on the cable so that the wings thoroughly mix the resin grout material as it makes its way down the annulus between the cable and bore hole wall as the cable is being forced into the bore hole. The anchored cable sling system is installed in a mine tunnel roof without the necessity of spinning or rotating the cable ends in order to mix the resin grout material. The system may also include a structural beam support and a post-installation tensioning means.

    • An insertion tool for inserting a multi-strand twisted cable into a blind mine tunnel roof bore hole includes a drive mechanism on one end thereof for fitting into a conventional bolting machine, and a socket on the opposite end thereof for receiving therein the bare end of a multi-strand twisted cable. The insertion tool socket is formed in the reverse pattern of the circumferential configuration of a conventional seven-strand twisted steel cable, having six essentially semi-cylindrical elongate and parallel arcuate channels formed therein in a spiral identical to that of the outside surfaces of respective cable strands of the twisted cable. The insertion tool is used by inserting, with a slight twisting action in the direction of the cable strand spiral, the bare end of the multi-strand steel twisted cable into the insertion tool socket mechanism. The opposite end of the insertion tool is then fitted into a conventional bolting machine boom arm for driving the multi-strand cable, via the insertion tool, into the bore hole in the mine tunnel roof in a manner similar to that in which the bolting machine would insert a conventional headed mine roof anchor bolt or multi-strand cable.

    • An anchored cable sling system stabilizes and supports the rock formation above a mine tunnel roof. Each shredding and mixing device comprises a square rod spirally wrapped around and crimped to the cable end. The spirally wrapped square rod cuts the resin capsule and mixes the chemical resin without the necessity for rotating the cable in the bore hole. The anchor collars include radially extending wings that: (1) also cut and shred the resin grout material capsules, (2) continue mixing the resin grout material as the cable end is being inserted into the mine tunnel roof bore hole, and (3) center the anchor collars and cable in the bore hole. The anchor collars are oriented on the cable so that the wings thoroughly mix the resin grout material as it makes its way down the annulus between the cable and bore hole wall as the cable is being forced into the bore hole. The anchored cable sling system is installed in a mine tunnel roof without the necessity of spinning or rotating the cable ends in order to mix the resin grout material. The system may also include a structural beam support and a device for post-installation tensioning the sling.

    • A mine tunnel roof bolt is constructed of one or more multi-strand steel cables that form the bolt shaft, the end(s) of which are press-fitted into a sleeve that defines the bolt head. The bolt can be either active (post-installation tensionable) or passive (not post-installation tensionable). Each of the cable bolt shafts includes an enlarged section that is slightly larger than the diameter of the axial bore through the bolt head sleeve so that the cable enlarged section interferes with the bolt head sleeve. The bolt will withstand a predetermined maximum amount of tension load, after which it will yield. Yield is effected by the cable enlarged section's being pulled through the bolt head sleeve, the interference therebetween causing both the sleeve and cable enlarged section to deform. The bolt will maintain its maximum tension load until the cable enlarged section is pulled through the bolt head sleeve. The cable enlarged section is formed by the addition of a spacer sleeve around the cable center strand (king wire) and between the cable center strand and peripheral strands, or by the addition of a cable sleeve around the cable at the appropriate location. Either design will result in the cable enlarged section's having a greater outside diameter than the bolt head sleeve axial bore, to result in the interference as the cable enlarged section is pulled through the bolt head sleeve.

    • An improved mine roof bolt is constructed of pre-tensioned, multi-strand steel cable. The bolt head is constructed of a hexagonal-or other drive-headed collar having an internally tapered frusto-conical bore therethrough, and a tapered plug having a frusto-conical outer surface that engages the frusto-conical inner surface of the drive collar. The tapered plug has an internal bore essentially concentric with the outer frusto-conical surface, and is adapted to fit over the multi-stranded steel cable, the hexagonal head drive collar fitting over the tapered plug such that pressing the tapered plug and steel cable into the inner frustoconical bore of the hexagonal-head drive collar causes serrations on the internal bore of the tapered plug to be urged down against, and bite into, the steel cable, resulting in a solid hexagonal head for the cable bolt. The tapered plug is in actuality, a pair of essentially identical diametrically opposed semi-frusto-conical tapered sections that more easily compress together to bite into the multi-strand steel cable. The improved mine roof bolt is intended for use in passive-type mine roof systems.
