    • In a camera provided with a flash unit, a device for limiting the preparatory operation for flashlight emission of said flash unit comprises metering means for detecting that the brightness of an object to be photographed is lower than predetermined brightness and producing a detection signal, means operable to start photographing, the operable means having a first operation stage for producing a first signal and a second operation stage for producing a second signal subsequently to the first operation stage, the photographing being started in response to the second signal, and means including timer means responsive to the first signal to count a predetermined time set shorter than the time required from after the first signal is produced until photographing is started in response to the second signal, said means causing the flash unit to effect the preparatory operation for flashlight emission in response to the detection signal of the metering means produced while the timer means is effecting the time count.

    • A camera, such as a video camera or other electrically recordable camera, has scale imprintable capabilities and a method for imprinting a scale onto memory storage media. The camera and method imprints, optically or electrically, a standard scale on memory storage media for the purpose of estimating the size of a subject image. A photographic magnification calculation circuit calculates the photographic magnification based on a subject distance, and a reference scale setting circuit sets a reference scale for the purpose of estimating the size of the subject image on the memory storage media regardless of the magnification during picture taking or print size. An imprinting circuit imprints, optically or electrically, the reference scale onto the memory storage media in accordance with the reference scale setting circuit, and only when needed or wanted. The reference scale can be imprinted in a vertical or horizontal direction in accordance with a mode selection switch. In addition, date, time and other information can also be imprinted onto the memory storage media. Picture taking will not be performed when it is not possible to accurately superimpose the reference scale and warning displays are generated.

    • A camera with a data imprinting device has a plurality of in-line LEDs producing light focused by an optical system upon a photographic film at a first and a second position, corresponding to a full size format and a panorama size format, respectively. The focused light imprints data images upon the film at the first position are larger than data images imprinted at the second position. The optical system has first and second prisms, with integrated lenses, for reflecting and focusing the light upon the film at the first and second positions, respectively. A shutter plate is selectively positioned over apertures through which the light is focused, thus blocking the light and allowing only a selected imprint to be made upon the film. A vertical pattern of the data image is created by a controller selectively illuminating the in-line LEDs while a horizontal pattern is produced by the controller illuminating the LEDs in coordination with the movement of the film past the apertures. The controller actuates a motor for advancing the film and has a sensor for detecting film travel. A first embodiment has the first prism positioned further from the film than the second prism, which is positioned further from the LEDs than the first prism, such that reflected light from the first prism has a path intersecting that of incident light of the second prism. A second embodiment has the prisms offset from each other in the plane of the film such that light paths do not intersect. The first embodiment has a narrower width than the second embodiment while the second embodiment has a shallower depth than the first embodiment.
