    • When a code word sequence is generated by converting input data words of p bits into code words of q bits and concatenating adjacent ones of the code words with a merge bit sequence of r bits in order to obtain the best DSV value, according to one aspect, the adjacent code words are concatenated with the merge bit sequence of r bits which is selected, free from the restriction of the minimum run-length of (d+1)T and the maximum run-length of (k+1)T based on the run-length limiting rule RLL(d, k) but permitting the minimum run-length of (d+1)T and the maximum run-length of (k+2)T. According to another aspect, a merge bit sequence to be inserted after a current code word is selected by prefetching the current code word, a next code word, and a further next code word, temporarily concatenating these code words with merge bit sequences of r bits respectively to prepare code word sequence candidates free from the predetermined run-length limiting rule, calculating the DSV values of the code word sequence candidates, selecting one of the code word sequence candidates having a DSV value whose absolute value is closest to zero, and selecting the merge bit sequence between the current code word and the next code word of the selected merge bit sequence candidate. According to a further aspect, the input data words are encoded by a p-q modulation scheme after introducing for a predetermined period, as an input data word, specific data comprising alternating current signals or direct current signals which would cause a modulation device that prefetches only the next code word to output a code word sequence which includes particular frequency components.

    • The speeds of two capstans of a dual capstan type tape recorder are individually controlled by respectively associated first and second phase locked loops. Each phase locked loop includes a speed detector for generating pulses at a frequency corresponding to the rotational speed of the associated capstan, a phase detector receptive of the pulses and a motor for driving the associated capstan in response to the output of the phase detector. A reference frequency oscillator supplies a constant frequency signal to a first frequency divider and to a second, programmable frequency divider which are respectively associated with the first and second phase locked loops. The first and second frequency dividers feed their outputs to the phase detectors of the first and second phase locked loops, respectively, to allow phase comparison with the received pulse to control the associated motors. The programmable frequency divider is controlled by a preset input to vary its frequency division ratio so that the speed of the capstan on the supply reel side is driven at a speed slight lower than the speed of the other capstan to maintain the recording tape between them under taut condition.

    • Disclosed is a control circuit for a brushless DC motor including a rotor having a series of alternating magnetic fields and a stator having a plurality of armature windings. The control circuit comprises at least one pair of Hall generators fixedly mounted with respect to the rotor for sensing the angular position of the rotor to generate a switching signal. An input torque command signal is applied sequentially to the armature windings in response to the switching signal to rotate the rotor. The strength of magnetic field linked with the windings and the magnitude of current generated therein are detected and multiplied to generate a torque representing signal which is subtractively combined with the input torque command signal prior to application to the windings.

    • A tape tension sensor is provided to produce an electrical signal indicative of the tension of the running tape of a compact cassette in a tape recorder, and this signal is processed to derive a high frequency component representing the variation in tape velocity. A tape-contactable member is driven by a control signal which is produced on the basis of the high frequency component. In a first embodiment, the tape-contactable member is electromagnetically operated by the control signal so that the member damps or absorbs the vibrations of the tape in the vicinity of the record/reproduce head. A low frequency component may also be derived from the sensor output to produce a second control signal. In the first embodiment, the second control signal is fed to a payoff reel drive motor so that the rotational speed of the payoff reel is controlled to maintain the tension of the tape constant. In a second embodiment, the high frequency component and the low frequency component are added to each other to produce a single control signal which is fed to a motor for driving an upstream capstan of a dual-capstan type tape recorder.
