    • Samples of commercial cellulose having high crystallinity (>80%) and a degree of polymerization of approximately 1500 were pretreated enzymatically under various conditions with commercial endoglucanases, before the chemical conversion to substituted cellulose derivatives was carried out. The enzymatically pretreated cellulose samples exhibited a significantly higher substitution, up to 222% higher, in comparison with control samples which had been treated with buffer without enzyme. The increase in substitution during the chemical reaction could be observed in the presence of various amounts of alkali, but fell as the amounts of alkali decreased. At the same degree of substitution of the cellulose derivative, the use of cellulose pretreated with endoglucanase significantly reduced the amount of alkali required by 60%, as compared with the use of cellulose pretreated only with buffer. Furthermore, by reducing the amount of water used in the reaction mixture in the chemical reaction, it was possible further to increase the substitution of enzymatically pretreated cellulose.

    • A process for producing aminoalkyl-containing guar derivative is disclosed. The process entails a) dispersing a member selected from the group consisting of guar and guar derivative in a mixture of a water-miscible aprotic solvent and water and b) alkalyizing the member with a base to obtain a mixture containing an alkalized member and c) etherifying the mixture with an amino-containing reagent to obtained an etherified mixture and d) optionally neutralizing the etherified mixture to obtain a material system containing a reaction product and e) optionally filtering the material system to obtain the reaction product and f) optionally washing the reaction product and g) optionally drying the reaction product referred to in f) and h) optionally grinding the reaction product. The product thus obtained is suitable for producing hair conditioners and flocculation aids.

    • A process is described for the preparation of cellulose derivatives containing amino groups that involves reacting, in the presents of water as a reaction medium, alkali cellulose or alkali cellulose derivatives with reagents represented by the following formula, X—(CH2)n—NR1R2 in which: X is selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine and a sulfonic acid radical R′SO3, in which R′ is an aromatic radical or an aliphatic radical; n is at least 2; and R1 and R2 independently of each other are selected from the group consisting of aliphatic substituents, branched alkyl substituents, cyclic alkyl substituents, aryl substituents, aryl substituents substituted by heteroatoms, H, and R1 and R2 together form a ring with the nitrogen. In the process, the mole ratio of cellulose to water, of said reaction medium, is 1:5 to 1:40 mol water per mol of anhydroglucose unit (AGU). Amino functional cellulose derivatives prepared in accordance with the method of the present invention are useful in cosmetic formulations and aqueous paper treatment compositions.
