    • Systems and methods which control communications in a carrier sense multiple access environment to provide a balance between communication sensitivity and transmission availability are shown. Adaptive interference control techniques of embodiments operate to determine a media error time metric representing the time associated with receiving interfering signals. The media error time metric of embodiments is used to adjust operation of various network systems in order to adjust communication sensitivity and/or transmission availability. Desensitizing thresholds and sensitizing thresholds may be used to define operating boundaries, such that desensitizing thresholds are used to control network desensitize actions which result in decreased error times and sensitizing thresholds are used to control network sensitizing actions which result in increased error times. Error time metrics and corresponding desensitizing and sensitizing thresholds may be utilized with respect to a plurality of radios. Embodiments provide for adjustment of control parameters based upon historical operation.

    • A method for sensing channel availability in a wireless network includes receiving a measurement request message which includes a channel interval list. A first channel interval in the list includes information associated with a first starting channel number, a first number of channels, and first linkage information of the channel interval list. The method includes processing information associated with the message, generating a first list of contiguous channels, and performing at least first channel measurement to determine a first channel availability for each of the first list of contiguous channels. The method also includes determining whether the channel interval list further includes a second channel interval that needs to be processed based on at least first linkage information, and if needed, generating a second list of contiguous channels and performing at least second channel measurement to determine a second channel availability for each of the second list of contiguous channels.

    • In an aspect of the method, a received data packet is decoded in order to determine a packet error rate value, and an average package error value for N received data packets is updated based on the determined packet error rate value. The updated average packet error rate value is then compared against a threshold value and a data rate request is issued based on this comparison. In another aspect, a response to a transmitted data packet is received, the response being related to an average packet error rate value. The average packet error rate value is compared against a threshold and a data rate is modified based on the comparison. In each of the above aspects, a data rate control margin that is used to overcome channel estimate errors resulting from transmission delays may be dynamically adjusted, e.g., in real time, in order to optimize system resources.

    • Disclosed are systems and methods which provide high bandwidth data communication with respect to a large coverage area using smart antenna and/or directional antenna (referred to herein as multi-beam antenna) technology. Circuitry may be provided at a WLAN AP to provide selection of particular antenna beams used in the downlink and/or uplink, control of multicast transmission, control of unicast transmission, and to provide antenna pattern shaping techniques. Embodiments implement multi-beam antenna technology with little or no hardware modifications to AP circuitry. Other embodiments implement multi-beam technology using radio front-end and/or radio hardware modifications to AP circuitry. Various diversity techniques may be implemented, such as selection diversity, maximum ratio combining, and equal gain combing. To provide desired antenna pattern shaping, phase offsets with respect to a signal as transmitted in each antenna beam may be employed.

    • A method of transmitting or receiving with constrained feedback information. A transmitter transmits a plurality of transmit signals from at least one transmit antenna. The plurality of transmit signals are based on one or more input signals, one or more power gains, and one or more beamformer matrices. The plurality of transmit signals are received as at least one receive signal, at at least one receive antenna of a receiver. The receiver generates the constrained feedback information and transmits the constrained feedback information back to the at least one transmit antenna. The transmitter selects at least one of the power gains and at least one of the beamformer matrices for a subsequent transmission based on the constrained feedback information.
