    • An elevator, preferably an elevator without counterweight, wherein the elevator car is suspended by hoisting ropes consisting of a single rope or a plurality of parallel ropes. The elevator has a traction sheave which moves the elevator car by means of the hoisting ropes. The elevator has rope portions of the hoisting ropes going upwards and downwards from the elevator car, and the elevator is provided with a safety gear fitted in conjunction with the elevator car and engaging a guide rail. The elevator is provided with a locking mechanism fitted in conjunction with the elevator car for locking the elevator car in place, said mechanism comprising means for activating and releasing the safety gear fitted on the elevator car.

    • Roping method and apparatus for replacing, installing and/or re-roping the hoisting rope of a traction sheave elevator, said elevator having an elevator car, which is at least partially suspended on a set of hoisting ropes, said set of ropes comprising one or more parallel ropes. The elevator car is moved by means of the ropes. In the method, a rope feed apparatus (1) acting on the hoisting rope is used to feed a new rope to the elevator and/or to pull out a possible old hoisting rope to make place for the new rope. The rope feed apparatus 1 (1) comprises at least a base (2) with at least one feed disc (30, 31) mounted on it, which feed disc (30, 31) engages the hoisting rope and to which feed disc (30, 31) the hoisting rope can be fitted, at least one guide roller (25) for keeping the hoisting rope in position on the feed disc (30, 31), a tightening element (19) for moving the feed disc (30, 31) relative to the guide roller (25) and tightening it in position on the base (2), and in addition at least one electric motor (27) fitted in the apparatus to rotate the feed disc (30, 31).

    • Method and system for installing the guide rails (1, 2), such as the car guide rails and/or counterweight guide rails, in an elevator shaft (3). The guide rails are installed by assembly in phases starting from the bottom (4) of the elevator shaft by placing one on top of the other guide rail sections (51, 52; 61, 62; 71, 72 . . . ) that are shorter than the whole length of the guide rail and by aligning the guide rail sections perpendicularly by means of the laser beam produced by a direction laser (8). The direction laser (8) is moved upwards along with progressive assembly of the guide rail. As assembly progresses the direction laser (8) is supported in the proximity of the top end of the topmost vertically aligned guide rail section at the time for aligning the next guide rail section to be installed in the vertical direction. These phases are repeated until the entire guide rail is assembled. The system comprises an alignment appliance (12), which can be supported against a guide rail section and fixed to it by means of a permanent magnet (20). In addition the alignment appliance contains an aligning element (13), at which the laser beam produced by the direction laser can be directed.

Tensioning elements attachable to the flexible sheet of material may be used to square up the flexible sheet of material. The template may be made by forming a thin, flexible sheet of material, providing indicia on the flexible sheet of material, and by providing tensioning elements to square up the flexible sheet of material. The flexible template may be placed on the floor of the elevator hoistway(s), squared, and the squared up template used as a guide to install the major elevator structural components. The template may, alternatively, be made of a substantially rigid, e.g., corrugated, sheet material and employ interconnected sections.
