    • A method for the sequential casting of steel strip in steel strip casting equipment wherein under normal operating conditions a steel melt is fed through a pouring tube having discharge ports into the pouring area of a cooled ingot mold at a location below the surface of the melt in the mold and is thereafter removed from the mold in the form of steel strip by the combined operation of mold oscillation means and strip discharge means. After the feed of melt is interrupted, anchoring rods are partially longitudinally immersed into the melt laterally of the pouring area of the mold, and the surface of the melt in the mold is lowered to a level below the pouring area. After a desired interval, the melt feed is continued, and the level of the surface of the melt in the mold is allowed to rise above the discharge ports of the pouring tube. Thereafter, casting flux is applied to the surface of the melt, and the operation of the mold oscillation means and the strip discharge means is resumed. The method also includes the steps of restarting the feed of melt through the pouring tube after a desired interval; allowing the level of the melt in the cavity of the mold to rise above the discharge opening of the pouring tube; thereafter applying a layer of casting flux to the surface of the melt in the mold; and restarting the strip discharge means and the mold oscillation means such that the original level of melt in the cavity in the mold is reestablished and maintained.

    • Apparatus and processes for use therewith are provided for the start-up of the continuous casting of strip metal, preferably steel, in which liquid metal is poured into a flared type continuous casting strip-shaped mold equipped with detector means for monitoring the instantaneous surface level of the liquid metal bath formed in the flared zone of the mold, and sensor means for sensing the presence of liquid in the core of the cast strip downstream of the mold, and means are further provided responsive to said detectors and sensor for controlling both the rate of pouring the liquid metal, and the start-up and rate of withdrawal of the cast strip to ensure the continuous presence of a liquid metal core in said cast strip downstream of said mold, for signalling when the distribution ports of the pouring tube become submerged, and for thereafter during casting maintaining a predetermined optimum operating surface level of said metal bath.

    • A method for concluding the operation of the continuous casting of strip metal comprising the steps of casting said strip in a narrow slotted strip shaped continuous casting mold having a flared inlet pouring zone necking down to a distal zone in which the walls of the mold are parallel and spaced apart by substantially the desired cross-sectional shape and dimensions of the strip being cast, pouring liquid metal through a pouring tube having an orifice into said flared zone, and controlling the pouring rate thereof, continuously detecting and monitoring the instantaneous surface level of the metal bath in said mold, withdrawing the casting from the distal end of said mold, and controlling the rate of withdrawal, adjusting the pouring rate and withdrawal rate so that the level of the metal bath is at a maximum height for said mold when in normal operation, continuously sensing whether or not there is present downstream of said mold evidence of the liquid core of said cast strip, reducing the pouring and withdrawal rates for concluding the casting to a rate at which the liquid core of the cast strip is near to but downstream of the mold and at which the metal bath level remains constant, terminating said pouring while continuing said withdrawal, whereby the metal bath level descends rapidly toward the neck end of said flared zone, reducing the withdrawal rate when the metal bath level is close to the lower end of the flared zone to a rate at which the upper surface of the metal bath can congeal sufficiently for further processing downstream by the time it reaches the end of the distal zone, and thereafter withdrawing the casting.

    • A roller guide for use in a continuous casting installation for steel is divided into segments. Each segment includes a fixed guide member which rests on a base and a movable guide member which is supported by the fixed guide member. The guide members carry rollers which cooperate to define a path for a continuously cast steel strand. The fixed guide member has a series of hollow columns which are aligned with respective tubular elements provided on the movable guide member. Spacers for adjusting the distance between the rollers are disposed between the columns and tubular elements. A tie rod extends through each column and has a first end located externally of but adjacent to the respective column. The first end of each tie rod has a passage which registers with a corresponding passage in the base. Each pair of registering passages receives a locking pin. The locking pins connect the tie rods to the base and indirectly connect the fixed guide member to the base via the tie rods. Each tie rod has a second end located in one of the tubular elements of the movable guide member. A compression spring in each tubular element reacts against the associated tie rod and against the movable guide member thereby urging the movable guide member towards the fixed guide member. The action of the compression springs also causes the locking pins, and hence the fixed guide member, to be braced against the base. A piston-and-cylinder unit mounted inside each tubular element is arranged to act against the adjacent end face of the associated tie rod counter to the respective compression spring.
