    • An apparatus and method for controlling lateral movement of a belt supported on two or more rollers in an electrophotographic printing machine. The belt is rotated for several revolutions and the actual profile of the belt edge is sensed and stored. A steering roll is then tilted at an angle large enough to overcome any steering system backlash and the belt drift rate is measured. Incremental steering adjustments are then made in the opposite direction until the belt drift rate reverses direction. The steering system backlash is then determined as a function of the incremental angle (which is a known number of steering motor steps) and the number of corrective steering changes made. The backlash for the system in the opposite direction is then determined in the same manner. Steering corrections to the belt are then made with compensation for backlash so that the steering system is more responsive.

    • A document reproduction system is disclosed which employs an imaging array assembly positioned to transmit reflected images from a document in an object plane onto an imaging plane. The imaging assembly includes a 1X lens array and at least one reduction/enlargement lens array. The overall dimensions of the total imaging area of the reproduction system are reduced from conventional fixed lens or fixed document system by providing means for moving the document, imaging assembly and imaging plane in certain prescribed relationships. These means include a pulley/cable/clutch arrangement which enables changes in velocity relationships which are required for a unity magnification mode of operation as well as those for a reduction or enlargement modes of operation.

    • The present disclosure describes a method of automatically controlling feeding and transporting print media sheets through plural electrostatic print engines having seamed photoreceptor belts for duplex printing. In one embodiment the second photoreceptor belt is driven at a variable speed to maintain a constant phase relationship between the respective seams of the belts. The print image magnification on the front side of the printed sheet is matched by varying the speed of the scanner (ROS) in the second engine. In another embodiment. the first and second photoreceptor belts are both driven at a constant speed and the seam phase allowed to float. Sensors provide a timing signal upon passage of the seam in each belt respectively; and, the position of the belt seams thus determined. The system then calculates a release time for each sheet from the feeder to insure the sheet avoids the seam on both belts.
