    • The present invention discloses a device and method for compensating for the time lag associated with circuitry within the television receiver when recognizing vertical sync. Accordingly, one aspect of the present invention introduces a static phase correction into the vertical drive sequence for a standard signal so that the television picture is more nearly vertically centered on the screen. Additional aspects of the invention provide for compatibility with other circuits in the television receiver. Specifically, a delay generator coordinates with the phase correcter and other phase and frequency monitoring circuits so that the receiver is not needlessly triggered into nonstandard operation.

    • A static phase error responsive oscillator control includes a phase detector coupled to a source of horizontal synchronizing pulses, a low pass filter, an error amplifier, a voltage controlled oscillator having a frequency equal to a multiple of the horizontal scan frequency, and a corresponding frequency divider. A threshold detector responds to error signals in excess of predetermined upper and lower thresholds to indicate large magnitude frequency corrections. An averaging circuit determines the long term character of the large magnitude corrections to alter the free-running or static frequency of the oscillator. Once the free-running frequency is corrected, static phase error is substantially reduced or eliminated.

    • A system for generating 2H pulses by counting cycles of reference signals whose frequency is related to the frequency of a color subcarrier signal. In one embodiment, four such reference signals are provided, each phase separated from the other by ninety degrees. A counter receives one of the reference signals for counting its cycles up to a preselected integral count. When the preselected count is reached, further circuitry generates an output pulse for clearing the counter and holding it cleared while the next reference signal is applied to the counter. The cycle of counting reference signal cycles, clearing the counter, and applying the next reference signal to the counter continues such that the four reference signals are applied to the counter sequentially. By proper selection of the integral count reached by the counter and the duration of its cleared state, the output pulses are developed at a 2H rate.

    • A vertical drive generator and a horizontal gating generator are described which time-share circuitry common to both generators to provide vertical drive pulses and horizontal gating pulses for use in a television receiver. The vertical drive generator converts variable width vertical rate pulses to constant width vertical drive pulses in a manner such that the duration of each drive pulse is determined by a digital counter. In the interval between the generation of successive vertical drive pulses, the counter is reset to provide timing control for the gating generator. In the preferred embodiment, the latter generator develops AGC gating pulses and burst gating pulses at selected times and for selected durations.

    • A pulse width modulator is described for width-modulating horizontal rate pulses developed in a television receiver and for applying the width-modulated pulses to the receiver's horizontal drive system. In the illustrated embodiment, the modulator includes a differential amplifier which senses the receiver's high voltage and beam current to develop a control signal which varies in accordance with variations in the beam current and the high voltage. A second differential amplifier receives the control signal and horizontal rate pulses for developing pulses whose width is varied in response to variations in the control signal. The width-modulated pulses cause the horizontal drive system to generate a substantially constant horizontal picture size despite variations in line voltage and brightness.

The composite video signal is separated into a plurality of frequency spectra which are individually processed utilizing digital electronic circuitry to achieve high performance and cost effectiveness. A comb filter is operative within one of the processors to provide separation of the luminance and chrominance information within the chrominance signal bandpass to maintain high frequency luminance signal components. A separate processor and bandpass filter are operative to provide separate control of the luminance peaking within the system. Separation of chrominance band signals from the luminance signal prior to video clamping provides a burst-free backporch for improved video clamping in a digital video processor. Conventional luminance and chrominance processing converts the output signals of the multiplexed processor to RGB video signals which are applied to a conventional cathode ray tube display having a conventional deflection system associated therewith.

    • An adaptive oscillator control system includes a phase locked loop together with a static phase error correction system and external scan system components. An oscillator range control includes a processor having a plurality of established oscillator frequency ranges which are identified by oscillator range code numbers. A first frequency approximation is provided based upon either an oscillator range code number or a known standard scan frequency. A frequency detector provides a second frequency approximation and a confidence circuit examines oscillator consistency and enables the phase locked loop. Thereafter, a lock detector responds to the occurence of frequency and phase lock by the phase lock loop to enable the static phase error corrector and deactivate the oscillator range control system. The lock detector upon detecting horizontal synchronization, for broadcast type video, increases the second frequency approximation range. The system changes oscillator frequency and tuning and adjusts external sweep components such as phase locked loop filter, horizontal yoke tuning, and drive signal applied to the horizontal output amplifier after lock.

    • An AGC gate signal generating circuit for a television receiver comprises a series RC circuit having a time constant for developing a charging current at a relatively slow rate in relation to a horizontal scanning line of a video signal and at a relatively fast rate in relation to a field of the video signal. The AGC gate signal is developed at the collector of a transistor whose base is coupled for receiving the video signal and whose emitter is coupled to the node formed between the resistor and capacitor of the RC circuit. The transistor is responsive to a nomimal level video signal for assuming a non-conductive state during horizontal scanning lines for charging the capacitor to a level below the video black level and for assuming a conductive state during horizontal sync intervals for discharging the capacitor to produce the collector current AGC gate signal. The transistor further assumes a conductive state for producing the AGC gate signal in response to a number of horizontal scanning lines of a reduced level video signal substantially less than a full field.

Television signals of the type under consideration include a plurality of video lines, each line having a standard color burst and video chrominance. On line 19 of each television field, a VIR signal is transmitted which includes a VIR color burst and a VIR chrominance reference. The correction system includes an amplitude comparator for sensing the difference in amplitude between the VIR color burst and the VIR chrominance reference, and for developing an amplitude error signal indicative of the sensed difference. A phase comparator develops a phase error signal on sensing a phase difference between the VIR color burst and the VIR chrominance reference. A phase controller receives at least the standard color burst portion of the television signal and responds to the phase error signal for correcting the phase of the standard color burst. A gain controller receives at least the video chrominance portion of the television signal and responds to the amplitude error signal for correcting the amplitude of the video chrominance.
