    • A circuit arrangement including means for determining a slicer level from incoming signal levels for slicing the incoming signal levels on the basis of the slicer level thus determined, includes a first and a second register circuit, which register circuits are connected to an output of a discriminator circuit. The discriminator circuit compares an incoming signal level with a set discrimination level and is adapted to apply an incoming signal level to the first register circuit if the incoming signal level is higher than the set discrimination level and to apply and incoming signal level to the second register circuit if the incoming signal level is lower than the set termination level. The first and the second register circuit are adapted to determine a register value of a least two different incoming signal levels consecutively applied to the register circuit. The circuit supplies a signal having a level which is a value determine from register values determined by the first and second register circuit. The supplied signal represents both the set discrimination level and the slicer level.

    • The invention relates to an amplifier circuit (20) and a method for reducing stray feedback, wherein an additional feedback compensation terminal is provided at the output of the amplifier circuit. A predetermined fraction of the output signal of the amplifier circuit is output at the feedback compensation terminal (RFB) so as to reduce the stray feedback of the output signal. The feedback compensation terminal (RFB) enables a reduction of the stray feedback by providing an additional stray feedback signal which is negatively added at the input of the amplifier circuit (20) to thereby reduce overall stray feedback. The gain may be adjusted once during manufacturing, or each time when operation of the device is initiated. The amplifier circuit (20) may be a transimpedance amplifier for use in a read head of a reproducing device for a record carrier.

    • Disclosed is an arrangement for reading an information carrier, comprising a read head for scanning the information carrier along a scanning path and thereby generating one or more electrical signals in response to a pattern recorded along the scanning path; a signal processing unit for processing the one or more electrical signals; electrical conductors for conveying the one or more electrical signals to the signal processing unit; characterized in that the arrangement further comprises controllable termination means for terminating at least one electrical conductor with a selectable impedance, the controllable termination means comprising at least two impedances and selecting means for selecting an impedance to terminate the at least one electrical conductor. The controllable termination means can select one of the at least two impedances. This makes the arrangement according to the invention capable of tuning to varying circumstances. If for certain circumstances a high impedance is needed, then a high impedance is selected. The varying circumstances can, for instance, be the speed at which the information carrier is rotated or the type of read head that is used.

    • A method and device for recording information blocks on a record carrier is described. The device has control means 20 for recording and retrieving position data indicative of the position of the recorded information blocks. The control means include a mapping unit 31 for determining in which region the information block is recorded and a detection unit 32. The region is one of a number of consecutive regions constituting the recordable area. The mapping unit records a random signal unit in a unit location in a mapping area. The unit location indicates region, and the unit length of the random signal unit is smaller then the length of information block. The detection unit 32 detects the presence of the recorded random signal units in mapping area and so determines if a region contains at least one information block. The highest written address is found by detecting the highest written unit location in the mapping area, and subsequently searching region for the presence of recorded marks.

    • The invention relates to a playback apparatus for retrieving information from an information carrier (2). The information has been recorded on the information carrier (2) in the form of variations of a first physical parameter. The playback apparatus scans the information carrier by means of a transducer (4), which is responsive to said variations of said physical parameter. An information recovering circuit (5) recovers the information from a first detection signal (D1) received from the transducer (4). The information recovering circuit (5) comprises a phase-locked loop (51). The information carrier (2) exhibits a second variation of a second physical parameter, which differs from said first physical parameter but which is detectable by means of said transducer (4). A detection circuit (6) detects the presence of the second variation on the basis of a second detection signal (D2) received from the transducer (4). The idea of the invention is that the detection circuit (6) is capable of using the phase-locked loop (51) of the information recovering circuit (5) to detect the presence of the second variation. The invention can be implemented very easily in, for example, DVD players to detect the presence of an information carrier (2) with DVD+RW format or an information carrier (2) with DVD−RW format. Only switching means (7) and some minor electronics have to be added; there is no need for an additional phase-locked loop.
