    • A cylinder lock having a plurality of plate-like tumblers, each of which is carried by the lock barrel to rotate therewith and each being adapted to locate within a respective locking recess provided in the lock body and thereby hold the barrel against rotation relative to the body. The tumbler plates are movable laterally relative to the barrel axis so as to be capable of removal from their respective locking recesses and thereby free the barrel for rotation. A locking pin interconnects the tumbler plates so that they move in unison between their barrel locking and release positions, and a plurality of rotatable discs interacts with that pin to control its ability to move radially inwards and thereby free the tumbler plates from their locking recesses. Each disc has a peripheral notch which must be located adjacent the locking pin to allow the aforementioned radial inward movement.

    • An operator for hinged windows and being of the kind including a chain which can flex in one direction only and which provides the support whereby the window is held open. Movement of the chain into and out of the operator housing is controlled by a sliding actuator which is moveable along an elongate guide track between two extreme positions corresponding to the window closed and fully opened positions respectively. The actuator can be retained in any selected position between the two extremes by engagement between a spring loaded detent and a toothed rack. The detent is carried by the actuator and the rack is fixed relative to the guide track. Release of the detent is effected by moving a lever connected to the detent against a fixed handle of the actuator and the actuator can be moved along the guide track while the lever and handle are so engaged. When the actuator is in the window closed position, the detent can be moved into a camming and locking recess by separation of the lever and handle and engagement of the detent with that recess causes an associated window to be drawn firmly into the closed position and also positively locks the actuator in the window closed position.

    • A padlock of the kind having a body and a U-shaped shackle which projects above an upper end surface of the body. The shackle has a captured leg which is retained against separation from the body but which can move relative to the body to allow the shackle to adopt a locked or a released condition. Another leg of the shackle has an end portion which is located within the body and is clear of the body respectively in the locked and released conditions of the padlock. A shroud is formed integral with the body and extends upwards from the body upper end surface so as to completely protect the front of the shackle under both the locked and released conditions. The shroud has a rearwardly opening cavity which substantially contains the shackle when in the locked condition so that the shackle is exposed only at the rear of the padlock. The rear of the padlock is substantially flat, whereas the front has a convex curvature.

    • A lock of the cylinder type having a plurality of discs forming part of the barrel assembly and being rotatable relative to one another and to the body of the barrel assembly. The rotational axis of each disc is substantially coincident with the rotational axis of the complete barrel assembly and each disc has a keyway forming opening which contains that axis. Locking means such as a side locking bar is operative to hold the barrel assembly against rotation relative to the lock cylinder, but that locking means is responsive to the rotational positioning of the discs to release the barrel assembly for rotation when the discs have a particular rotational position relative to one another. The barrel assembly can be rotated in either direction away from the normally locked condition. A key for use with such a lock has an elongate blade which is of non-circular cross section and is twisted to create a plurality of relatively angularly disposed locating portions which are spaced apart longitudinally of the blade. Each locating portion is adapted to cooperate with a respective disc to hold that disc in the aforementioned particular rotational position. The hand of twist is reversed at least once along the blade length and sloping camming surfaces on the blade promote radial movement of the discs as the blade is moved through the lock keyway.

    • A key blank in which the upper edge surface of the blade has a longitudinal groove dividing that surface into two laterally spaced parts, and a relatively narrow waist is formed in the blade upper portion by progressive narrowing of the blade width downwardly from and adjacent the upper edge surface. The blade is basically a flat parallel sided member and the waisting is created by two substantially symmetrical grooves. Each part of the upper edge surface on each side of the longitudinal groove slopes downwardly and outwardly so as to be substantially normal to the flat sloping surface of the adjacent waisting groove. A key formed from the blank described has bittings cut in the upper edge surface and each bitting is cut on an angle so that the base of each resulting valley part slopes at substantially the same angle as a part of the upper edge surface. Alternate valley base surfaces may slope in opposite directions. A lock having a keyway with a cross sectional shape complimentary to that of the key blank blade described and having two series of pin tumblers arranged angularly relative to one another so that one series is engageable with one upper surface part of the key and the other series is engageable with the other upper surface part of the key. The invention is also directed to a combination of a lock and key described and further to a master keyed system including a plurality of locks and keys.

    • A security bolt including a housing and a bolt rod slidably mounted on that housing for relative movement between operative and inoperative positions. The rod is cylindrical and has a section of reduced diameter between its ends so as to form two opposed shoulders. Key operated locking mechanism, having a rotatable barrel, is attached to the housing and a detent member is rotatably mounted on an end portion of that barrel. The detent member is rotatable to a position at which it engages one of the rod shoulders and thereby prevents movement of the rod out of the operative position. Rotation of the detent member is caused by rotation of the barrel, but a lost motion connection enables the barrel to rotate to a limited extent in either direction without causing corresponding rotation of the detent member. The locking mechanism can be removed from the housing through a rear side and releasable securing means controls that removal. A floating member located between the rod shoulders is arranged to be trapped between one of those shoulders and an opposed surface of the housing so as to prevent separation of the rod from the housing in one direction.

    • A lock for a sliding window or door and having a body which is adapted to be secured to either an outwardly facing surface or a laterally facing surface of the movable frame of the window or door. The lock includes a locking bar which is slidably mounted on the lock body for relative movement into and out of an operative position at which it projects beyond a back surface of the lock body and engages within a hole in the fixed frame of the window or door. The lock body is secured to the movable frame by means of fastening screws extending through bores formed through a mounting part of the body and those bores include primary bores which extend in the front to back direction and secondary bores which extend laterally through the mounting part. The primary bores are used if the body is to be secured to the outwardly facing frame surface and the secondary bores are used if the body is to be secured to the laterally facing frame surface. The fixing means may include an expandable nut located in the movable frame and which is expanded into tight engagement with that frame by interaction between an end of the screw and a tapered section of a bore of the nut.

    • A door or window lock has a body which is securable to the door, window, or a surround for a door or window, and has at least two passages therethrough that extend angularly relative to one another. A locking bar is slidable axially in any one of the passages to adopt either an operative position or an inoperative position, and in the operative position a locking end portion of the bar protrudes a predetermined distance beyond an adjacent side of the body. The bar can adopt either of two operative positions for each passage and in each of those positions the locking end portion protrudes beyond a respective one of two opposite sides of the body. A key operated locking member is rotatably mounted on the body and can adopt a particular locking position for each of the passages. In the locking position for one passage, the locking member protrudes into a recess of the bar to hold the bar against movement in either direction from its operative position. In the locking position for the other passage, the locking member influences an intermediate member to protrude into the bar recess when the bar is in the operative position for that passage. Spring retainers function to releasably locate the bar in each of its operative positions.

    • An actuator assembly in which the actuator is usually the rotatable barrel of a key operated tumbler lock. The actuator assembly is connectable through a non-circular drive spindle to any conventional deadbolt assembly of the kind having a tubular housing securable to support, a lever rotatably mounted on the housing and a deadbolt slidably mounted within the housing and responsive to rotation of the lever. A body member of the actuator assembly is securable to the support separate from the deadbolt housing and the lock barrel is rotatable relative to that body member. A gear segment secured to the barrel for rotation therewith is engageable with another gear segment rotatably carried on the body member, but only during part of its possible 360.degree. movement from the rest or locked position of the barrel. The other or driven gear segment has a drive spindle secured to it and that spindle engages within a bore of the bolt assembly lever to transmit rotation of the driven gear segment of the lever.

    • Deadbolt mechanism for holding a door in a closed position and including a deadbolt pivotally connected to the mechanism housing for movement into and out of that housing to adopt inoperative and operative positions respectively. A pin tumbler lock is used to operate the deadbolt and the lock barrel is rotated through 360.degree. during the change of deadbolt positions whereas the deadbolt swings through 90.degree. only. The drive between the lock barrel and deadbolt includes a pair of gear segments which engage during the 90.degree. travel of the deadbolt and are otherwise disengaged to permit the lock barrel to rotate free of the deadbolt. The drive also includes a pivoted arm which locates between side walls of the deadbolt and has a laterally extending pin slideably locating within a slot in each of the side walls. When the gear segments are engaged the arm is swung such that a camming action occurs between the pin and cooperating slots whereby the deadbolt is caused to move about its pivot. The pin moves along the slots in one direction and then back again during each change of deadbolt position. A biassing spring is also located between the deadbolt side walls. A deflector plate is secured to the lower edge of the deadbolt and a transverse slot in the upper edge of the deadbolt receives an edge portion of a housing wall in the operative position of the deadbolt.
