    • A molten metal pump includes an impeller, a pump base housing at least partially enclosing the impeller, a shaft connected to the impeller, a motor connected to the shaft, a motor mount plate for supporting the motor; and a post for connecting the motor mount plate to the pump base housing. The molten metal pump can include a connector that connects the post to the motor mount plate. The molten metal pump can include a socket for connecting the shaft to the motor. The shaft can comprise an assembly including an elongated metal rod having a first end and a second end and a metal non-circular drive member attached at the second end of the elongated metal rod. The impeller can include a cap member having a plurality of generally polygonally shaped inlet openings communicating with internal passages of the impeller, each inlet opening having an inner wall and an outer wall, the outer wall being longer than the inner wall, each inlet opening also including a leading wall and a trailing wall, the leading wall and the trailing wall each interconnecting the inner wall and the outer wall and each being inclined such that an uppermost edge of each wall precedes a lowermost edge of each wall in a first rotational direction.

    • A molten metal pump having an elongated shaft with an impeller disposed adjacent the end of the shaft and a means for rotating the shaft. The impeller is formed with an imperforate substantially circular base surrounded by a bearing and has a surface facing toward the shaft. At least two imperforate vanes are connected to and extend substantially perpendicular from the surface and radially from the shaft or a hub securing the shaft toward a peripheral portion of the base. The vanes are spaced apart at terminal inlet ends along their entire radial dimension to create an inlet area comprised of the axial opening between adjacent vanes at the terminal ends and an outlet area comprised of a radial opening between adjacent vanes along the axial direction of the vanes. Each vane has a leading edge with a distal portion adjacent the periphery of the base portion which forms an angle of less than about 100.degree. relative to a tangent to said circular base drawn at the center of the vane.

    • A molten metal pump for transferring molten metal from a first vessel to a second vessel. The pump is constructed of a base member including a pumping chamber, a motor supported by at least one post, a rotatable shaft secured at a first end to said motor and at a second end to an impeller disposed within said pumping chamber. The pumping chamber includes an outlet to a first end of an elongated refractory tube having a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the shaft. The tube has a second end passing through an opening in the platform. The tube includes a metallic cladding attached to an outer wall adjacent it's second end. A releasable fastening member is used to secure to the portion of the tube having the metallic cladding to the platform.

    • A molten material pump includes an impeller housed within a base member of the pump. A plurality of grooves are defined in a peripheral sidewall of the impeller for either drawing a molten material into the base member's chamber or pushing molten material out of the base member's chamber. The impeller is rotated by a rotatable shaft connected to an upper surface of the impeller. The rotatable shaft includes a non-circular shaped lower end dimensioned to be received within a cooperating opening in the impeller. The molten material pump further includes a connecting assembly for interconnecting components of the molten material pump. The connecting assembly includes a first mounting member attached to a first pump component that is dimensioned to be fitted within a cooperating recess of a second mounting member attached to a second pump component. In another embodiment of the invention, a stub shaft connects an upper shaft portion of the shaft to the impeller. The stub shaft includes a universal joint that is not rigidly connected to the upper shaft portion. In addition, the universal shaft is configured to allow the stub shaft and impeller to pivot. A floating deflector block weighs on an upper sealing block of the pump for enhancing the seal at the pump's bearing surfaces.
