    • A tuner drive assembly for use with a UHF tuner mechanism of the type having a rotary control shaft includes a rotatable tuning shaft and drive means operably connected between the control shaft and the tuning shaft which are effective when actuated by the rotation of the tuning shaft to rotate the control shaft. A rotatable and axially movable turret is provided operably connected to the drive means to be driven thereby. A plurality of radially extending position adjustable elements are helically arranged on the turret. Means are provided for sequentially sensing the radial position of each of the elements as the turret is moved. The sensing means is effective to actuate the drive means to rotate the control shaft in accordance with the radial position of the elements being sensed. One position adjustable element is provided for each channel and the position thereof determines the fine tuning setting for the channel corresponding thereto. When a channel is selected by rotating the tuning shaft, the position of the corresponding element is sensed and the drive assembly automatically rotates the control shaft to select the proper fine tuning adjustment for that channel.

    • A tuner drive assembly for use with a tuning mechanism for selecting one of a limited number of channels in the UHF band. The assembly has a rotatable turret which is driven by the input shaft. The turret has first and second spaced end sections with a plurality of screw elements rotatably mounted therebetween. One screw element is provided for each channel to be selected. Each element has a threaded portion and an internally threaded member normally engaging the threaded portion is mounted thereon for axial movement along the element as the element is rotated. The threaded portion is spaced from both end sections such that the member is permitted to disengage or ''''run off'''' the threaded portion at either end of its travel as the element is rotated, thus preventing breakage or jamming of the member and the element. Means are provided which are effective when disengagement occurs to relatively move the member and the threaded portion together to cause re-engagement thereof when the element is rotated in the opposite direction. Means are provided for sensing the axial position of the member in order to corporeally condition the tuning mechanism to select the appropriate channel in accordance therewith. First and second indicating means are provided for indicating the rotational position of the turret and the axial position of the member, respectively.

    • The assembly has a detented rotatable selector shaft and a rotatable fine tuning shaft which is adapted to move with the selector shaft to preserve the fine tune setting as the channels are changed. Drive means connected to both shafts and the input member of the tuning element is adapted to drive the input member in accordance with the movements of each of the shafts respectively. Normally, the movement of the fine tune shaft and associated components, caused by movement of the selector shaft, has an adverse inertial effect on the drive means because of the intermittent rotation of the selector shaft due to the detenting thereof. This effect manifests itself by causing the fine tuning shaft and associated components to rotate through a greater angle than the selector shaft thereby disturbing the fine tuning setting. The present invention provides inertia means operably connected to the drive means and the fine tune shaft which is movable relative to the fine tune shaft during the movement thereof. The inertia means has an inertial effect on the drive means during movement of the selector shaft which is substantially equal to but in an opposite sense from the inertial effect of the fine tune shaft and associated components. Thus, the inertia means serves to counterbalance the inertial effect of the fine tuning shaft thereby stabilizing the fine tuning setting.
