    • A tape recorder of the present invention comprises a pair of feed and take-up spools for winding a tape as recording media, a rotatable drum rotated to wind and run the tape between the pair of spools over the drum surface helically, a head for recording, reproducing or erasing signals on the tape wound over said drum surface, and control means for controlling the relative positional relationship between the head and the tape wound over the drum surface based on an error signal such that said signals are stably recorded, reproduced or erased along a desired track, the control means having means for holding the error signal during the period in which the tape is discontinued over a drum surface. The value of the error signal at the time immediately before the tape disappears from the drum surface, or the value of the error signal at the time immediately after the tape reappears over the drum surface during the preceding rotation of the drum is used as the error signal to be held, thereby allowing to stably restart the positioning control when the tape reappears over the drum surface.

    • An optical tape apparatus having improved focus and tracking control. An optical head records, reproduces, or rewrites data on an optical tape by helically scanning the tape with a laser beam. A guide plate is disposed between the optical head and the tape to prevent the beam from becoming unfocused due to fluctuation of the tape cuased by an air film between the optical head and the tape. The optical head contains a semiconductor laser and an optical system exhibiting chromatic aberration for directing the laser beam onto the tape. The optical system includes a condenser lens for focusing the beam onto the tape. Fine focus control is achieved by changing the wavelength of the laser beam by directing part of the beam reflected from the tape back to the laser, thereby changing the focal point of the beam by virtue of the chromatic aberration of the optical system. Coarse focus control is achieved by mounting the condenser lens on a piezoelectric actuator which moves the consenser lens to focus the beam onto the tape. A recording head for recording timing marks and tracking signals on the tape is disposed in advance of the optical head. A reading head reads the timing marks and the optical head reads the tracking signals. The timing marks and tracking signals are used to control the operation of the apparatus such that the tape is transported with a constant speed and data on diagonal signal tracks on the tape is accurately recorded, reproduced, or rewritten.

    • The reliability of data is significantly increased without considerably increasing costs by performing minor data corrections within an information storage device and performing major error corrections in an information processing device. When a request to transfer user data for reading is issued from an information processing device, a control circuit transfers the user data and management data to an error detection circuit, which checks the user data for errors. If the user data contains no error, the control circuit notifies the information processing device that the user data can be transferred, and transfers it to the information processing device. If the user data contains errors, an X count error position and correction data calculation circuit uses the user data and the management data to calculate correction locations and correction data, and judges whether the correction locations are correctable. If uncorrectable (there are more correction locations than X locations), the control circuit notifies the information processing device that the user data is uncorrectable, and then transfers the user data and the management data to the information processing device.

    • An idling rotational speed control system for an internal combustion engine installed in a vehicle including an air-fuel ratio sensor arranged in the exhaust system, and an ECU which corrects the air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture supplied to the engine in a feedback manner responsive to an output from the air-fuel ratio sensor, by using an air-fuel ratio correction amount calculated according to the output from the air-fuel ratio sensor. The rotational speed of the engine is detected, and the ECU controls the rotational speed of the engine during idling to a desired value in a feedback manner responsive to the detected rotational speed of the engine. The ECU determines whether the idling rotational speed control system is abnormal, based on the detected rotational speed of the engine and a control parameter used for the control of the rotational speed of the engine during idling. The idling rotational speed control system includes at least one of a brake system operation sensor for detecting operation of the brake system, and a throttle valve opening sensor for detecting opening of the throttle valve. When at least one of conditions is satisfied that the brake system is operated, the opening of the throttle valve exceeds a predetermined value, and the air-fuel ratio correction amount falls outside a predetermined range, the abnormality determination is inhibited.

    • A control system for an internal combustion engine controls a fuel injection amount based on operating conditions of the engine and an evaporative fuel concentration-dependent correction coefficient. The control system includes a purge control valve arranged in a purging passage connecting a canister for temporarily storing evaporative fuel generated from a fuel tank and an intake passage. This coefficient is held to a predetermined value for a predetermined time period after purging is permitted, and to another for a predetermined time period after purging is inhibited. In another aspect, the purge control valve is controlled based on operating conditions of the engine and a purging flow rate correction coefficient. This coefficient is held when purging is inhibited, and is progressively set to a larger value depending on the evaporative fuel-dependent correction coefficient, after purging is permitted. In another aspect, when a vehicle on which the engine is installed is started, the purge control valve is controlled based on a special purging control amount which is progressively increased based on a parameter related to a standing start of the vehicle. In another aspect, the operation of the purge control valve is inhibited for a predetermined time period dependent on a temperature of the engine, after the start of the engine.
