    • The temperature stabilization body is made of pulverized aluminum nitride with a first additive of pulverized aluminum present between 0.05% to 2%, and a grain size of under 1 micrometer, and a second additive of from 0.1% to 10% of an oxide, preferably yttrium oxide, present at about 1%--all precentages by weight, in which the mixture is ground in a ceramic ball mill to a grain size of not over 0.1 mm, subjected to cold isostatic pressure in the order of 2500 bar to form a green, pressed body, and then sintered at a sintering temperature of between 1750.degree. C. to 2000.degree. C. The heat conductivity of the densely sintered aluminum nitride body will then be at least 140 W/m .degree.K., and a heat conductivity of twice as much can be obtained, the body being non-toxic and not subject to creep under temperatures up to at least 1700.degree. C.

    • In order to connect a tube of a more common material, such as stainless steel, to a tube of a highly corrosion-resistant metal such as tantalum, where the two tubes cannot be welded together by fussion technology, a connection piece is made of two closely fitting layers of the two materials telescoped into each other, which are exposed to hot compressed noble gas, such as argon, in a pressure vessel, with precautions against oxidation from residual oxygen in the noble gas. Then the ends are machined to remove any hard soldered portion used to make a gas-tight seal of the blank before pressure treatment, after which a longer ring-shaped section of the stainless part of the connection piece is removed at one end and likewise a section of the tantalum part of the connection piece at the other end, so that the projecting ends can be welded to the pipes to be joined. One method of protection against oxidation is to use a blank in which a tantalum tube is fitted between two stainless steel tubes, one of which is completely removed by machining after the pressure treatment.

    • A cable for connecting a cardiac pacemaker to an electrode inserted in the heart through the blood stream utilizes a die-clad conductor or a number ofthem, especially several die-clad strands forming a twisted conductor of the stranded type, enclosed in a covering tube of a synthetic elastomer. The core of each die-clad strand is of a highly conducting metal, such as copper or a high-copper alloy. The outer cladding is a metal selected from the group consisting of tantalum, titanium, zirconium, niobium, titanium-base alloys, platinum, platinum-iridium alloys, platinum-palladium alloys and platinum-rhodium alloys. The cladding thickness is in the range from 0.0025 to 0.035 mm, while the cord diameter is between 0.04 to 0.3 mm. When tantalum, titanium, zirconium, niobium or titanium-alloy cladding is used, the outer surface can be made electrically insulating, preferably by anodizing.
