    • A pneumatic tire with an increased load carrying capacity (extended load index) but compatible with conventional, commercially available wheel rims, has a modified carcass plyline. The tire has a tread area, a carcass structure including two bead areas each comprising a bead, at least one cord-reinforced elastomeric ply extending between the two bead areas, and two sidewalls, one sidewall extending between the tread area and each bead area. The tire is characterized by: a section width defined by lines L1 and L2 disposed orthogonally to an axis of rotation of the tire and at equal distances on either side of the equatorial plane of the tire; a plyline that follows the meridional path of a radially and axially outermost one of the at least one ply; points P1, P2 on the plyline, being located where the plyline is axially outside of one of the beads and simultaneously at a minimum radial distance of dp1, dp2, respectively, from the axis of rotation AR; lines M1 and M2 each parallel to, and axially inwards of, lines L1 and L2, respectively, and passing through points P1 and P2, respectively; a first distance of 1 mm to 5 mm being the spacing from line L1 to line M1, and from line L2 to line M2; limiting radial distances r1 and r2 that exceed the distances dp1 and dp2, respectively, by a value of 30% to 70% of a section height SH of the tire; and the plyline extending radially outward in each sidewall to the limiting radial distance r1, r2 without axially deviating from lines M1, M2, respectively, by more than a second distance of 0 mm to 5 mm.

    • A pneumatic radial ply passenger tire (10) having a tread (12), a casing with two sidewalls (20), two radial plies (38, 40) extending from and wrapped about two annular beads (26) and a belt reinforcement structure (36) located radially between the tread and the plies. Inner ply (38) is reinforced with essentially inextensible metal cords and is designed to carry a compressive load during runflat operation. Outer ply (40) is reinforced with organic-fiber cords designed to withstand tensile stresses during runflat operation. A circumferentially deployed insert (42) is disposed between the inner and outer radial plies (38, 40) in each sidewall (20) adjacent to the shoulder of the tread. The metal cords (41) of inner ply (38) have compressive-load-hearing capacity which reduces the mass of the insert material (42).     • A passenger tire having a tread, a casing with two sidewalls, one or more radial plies extending from and wrapped about two annular beads and a belt reinforcement structure located radially between the tread and the piles. The tread has a central rib with a first contour-defining curve extending outwards from the mid centerline of the tire towards the sidewalls and a pair of side ribs each having a second contour-defining curve disposed between the central rib and the sidewalls. The first and second contour-defining curves each have first and second radii disposed such that the meeting point of first and second adjacent contour-defining curves cannot contain a single line that is mutually tangential to the first and second adjacent contour-defining curves. First and second circumferential decoupling grooves are disposed on either side of the centerline at the meeting point of the first and second adjacent contour-defining curves, and define a circumferential line at the bottom of the grooves which is a region of greater flexibility than the adjacent ribs of the tire tread to decouple a sidewall bending stresses from the central rib.
