    • Device for measuring speed of oblong products moving along feed direction and emitting radiations, in particular rolled metal products in rolling line, including two radiation sensors, disposed reciprocally at close distance respectively defining an optical observation window, at pre-arranged distance from each other. Each window covers the image of an advancing product determinate portion equal to relative window width, irrespective of portion's movements transverse to feed direction. Sensors observe the presented product portion, on each occasion, in correspondence with associated windows consecutively along feed direction, and measure continuously intensity of radiation from the product portion in correspondence with the windows. Electronic processing unit determines, by processing electric signals associated with detected radiation intensity and arriving from sensors, using algorithms based on the correlation principle, time taken by the product portion to transit from first window to second, successive window, and then, based on distance between windows, calculates product speed.

    • A method controls the section sizes of a rolled product in a segment of a rolling line between at least two rolling stands, wherein each is provided with its own drive members, in which at least a detector located between the two rolling stands detects a characteristic size of the rolled product. A control unit compares the characteristic size of the rolled product with a reference size and acts on said drive members in order to hold the rolled product in an optimal drawing condition. The method comprises setting a predefined value of an electric quantity of at least one of the drive members, measuring the reference size, and verifying the characteristic size of the rolled product in transit. If a deviation is detected between the characteristic size and the reference size, returning the characteristic size of the rolled product to the reference size.

    • A device for controlling the level in a container of a liquid which will emit infra-red rays and particularly molten metal is described. The device comprises a housing, at least one longitudinal window at one end of the housing and arranged so that when in use it will overlook an edge of a container containing the liquid, the level of which is to be controlled; and at least one photo-element for sending out an electrical signal through said window to said liquid; at least one second window which is substantially punctiform and which overlooks a substantially constant portion of the liquid in the container and within the vertical field of adjustment; and a second photo-element in cooperation with the second window for sending out a pilot signal, and circuitry to correct the signal indicating the liquid level of the container by means of the pilot signal and for amplifying and comparing the signal coming from the correction circuit. The device when in use is positioned so that the optical axis thereof is at an angle to a line vertical to the liquid level in the container, whereby the longitudinal window cooperates with the edge of the liquid containing container, the level of which is to be measured and controlled. Additional windows and photo-electric elements can be utilized to accomplish ancillary functions, including adjusting the speed of withdrawal of liquid from the container and/or to adjust the quantity of liquid in the container as, for example, in a continuous casting ingot mold. The device is simple in construction, easily operated, and accurate.
