    • Embodiments of a system and method of tagging network traffic with relevant user demographic and location information for facilitating the delivery of directed media are described. A tag processing module within a router device coupling a client computer to a destination site served by a server computer intercepts a request from a client computer to a server computer over a network. The tag processing module determines a unique device identifier corresponding to the client computer, generates a local user identifier for the client computer by performing a one-way hashing operation on the unique device identifier, derives demographic and location information for a user of the client computer, generates a request identifier associated with the intercepted request by encrypting the local user identifier, demographic information and geographic location information in an alphanumeric string, and embeds the alphanumeric string in an extensible field of a packet within the request to generate a tagged request identifier.

    • A welded pipe joint having reduced internal stresses comprises a pipe, a socket fitting, and an annular weld. The end surface of the fitting is chamfered in a concave profile, so that the weld profile subtends an angle of from about 100 degrees to about 120 degrees, rather than the customary 90 degrees. The fitting and the pipe are welded together by applying, from outside the pipe, an annulus of added bead metal to the chamfered end surface of the fitting so as to surround the chamfered end surface, and fusing the base metal of the annular wall and pipe. The pipe has no dam or other protuberance to confine the bead of added metal. Prior to welding, the fitting may have an annular lip immediately surrounding the surface of the pipe and may also have a ring spaced from the lip. The ring may be integral with the fitting and spaced from the lip by thin, radially spaced metal bars or may be separate from the fitting.

    • A local area network having fault detection and recovery and a method for detecting and recovering from faults in a local area network are disclosed. The network has modules interconnected by a token bus implemented by a pair of redundant cable systems. All of the modules are agent modules and one of the modules also serves as a master module. Each agent module periodically transmits an agent heartbeat signal on each of its cables. Each module monitors all of the agent heartbeat signals from all of the other modules. When a fault is detected by a module, such as missed agent heartbeat signals from another module, the module applies agent rules to determine if and how the fault should be reported. The agent module reports the fault to the master module. The master module collects fault reports from the agent modules, applies a set of master rules to the agent fault reports, and generates a master failure report. The master module also initiates an appropriate network recovery action based upon the failure report generated. The master module periodically transmits a master heartbeat signal on the token bus which is received by the agent modules. The agent modules decode the master heartbeat signal to ensure that a master module is always present on the token bus.

The UGP process is implemented as an interactive application used to understand and segment internet users through graphical question and answer methodology. Over time as internet users participate and interact with the application more preferences are discovered which creates a silo, or profile, of information unique to each user. The interactive question and answer structure is directed to consumer users who are accessing specific websites or browsing the Internet. The UGP process provides the ability for a content provider to engage the user at several different times during the web browsing session, each in a slightly different way, but each in an equivalently engaging way.

    • Embodiments of a system and method for managing multi-media advertising campaigns across multiple online and offline media sources are described. A durable network identifier is associated with a client device that is used to access an advertising network. The durable identifier comprises an alphanumeric tag associated with network traffic transmitted through routing devices of the network. The durable identifier indexes relevant user demographic and client device information for facilitating the delivery of directed media within the advertising network and is embedded within requests sent from the client computer to a target server computer over a network. A campaign management platform processes certain user metrics provided by the tag processing service and supplements this information with certain extrinsic data. Analysis processes determine behavioral or contextual targeting, as well as user response to ad messages.
