    • A mechanism for automatically and successively cutting the thread chain in a bag-closing sewing machine after the upper edges of each bag are stitched together which essentially employs: (a) a novel and special throat plate cooperating with the presser foot of the sewing machine for receiving and guiding the upper edges of filled bags as they are moved through the machine by carrier means, and for accommodating and assuring the cooperation of the needle mechanism and looper mechanism to stitch horizontally the upper edges in said guiding action; (b) at the bag delivery end of the throat plate an outwardly protruding bag-edge guiding ramp is provided, extending horizontally and spaced outwardly from the main body of the throat plate and joined with the body in an inclined, outwardly projected juncture and thereafter extending for a short distance in substantially planar form to an abrupt outer end; (c) a thread chain receiving slot extending longitudinally therein through said ramp and open at the bag delivery end of said ramp whereby stitching produced by the machine immediately following the trailing end of each stitched bag is automatically engaged in said slot and moved outwardly a slight distance with the trailing bag; (d) a thread chain cutting mechanism mounted inwardly of the ramp or at least its outer portion and comprising a movable sharp edge blade operating in a general plane perpendicularly of said slot and in position inwardly of said ramp; (e) and driving connections between the shiftable cutter blade and a powered element of the sewing machine to cause operation of the blade for each cycle of operation of the general components of the sewing machine.

    • An automatic bag closing machine for bags moving along a path wherein tape is folded over and along the open ends of successively arriving bags and then stitched to the bags to close them and the tape clipped adjacent leading and trailing edges of each bag. A fluidic control system with fluidic bag detection apparatus, including sensors located at spaced intervals along the path of the bags, actuates a sewing head when a bag is detected and continues sewing head operation until the bag passes through the machine. The fluidic control system also actuates a tape clipper assembly including a moving knife, swinging the knife to clip the tape adjacent the leading and trailing edges of the bag, the tape clipper assembly further including a pair of alternating pistons operatively connected to the knife to swing it across the path and return, a first piston being actuated by the control system when the detection apparatus signals the control system that the bag is a predetermined distance upstream from the knife, and a second piston being actuated to again swing and return the knife when the bag is a predetermined distance downstream of the knife. The invention also includes a method of closing taped bags with a bag closing machine having a fluidic control system wherein bags passing through the machine are detected by a fluidic bag detection apparatus.

    • A bag guiding assembly for cooperating with the thread chain cutter of a bag closing machine to aid in the severing of the thread chain interconnecting bag tops which have been stitched closed by the sewing head of the machine. The assembly includes a pair of cooperating rollers rotatably mounted to a frame and located on the downstream side of the thread chain cutter, the rollers and cutter being arranged along a straight line path so that a bag travels along the path past the sewing head and thence to and through the cooperating rollers so as to urge the bag top along the straight line path, the rollers exerting a pulling force on each bag passing therebetween to keep taut the thread chain interconnecting the bag tops and directing the thread chain through the thread chain cutter to insure severance thereof. A power transmission system equipped with a slip clutch drives the rollers and permits stoppage of roller rotation if a bag engaged by the rollers is prevented from moving any further along the path.
