    • Method and apparatus for transmitting messages in a two-way paging system are disclosed. Reply codes corresponding to portions of a message to be transmitted by a base station and received by a mobile pager device are computed either at the base station or at the pager according to various embodiments. The reply codes, which are typically shorter and require less bandwidth than the full text to which they correspond, are incorporated by the pager into reply messages when the user of the pager device wishes to refer to portions of the text of the received message in his reply. The present invention advantageously allows the user of a pager device to respond to a received message by transmitting a reply message that incorporates part of the text of the original received message without significantly increasing the bandwidth required to transmit the response.

    • Ghosts are canceled in received analog TV (for IDTV, EDTV, and HDTV) signals by utilizing the fact that there are short periods of time without the analog signals (the horizontal flyback interval between the lines) to process the received signal on a line-to-line basis using a finite impulse response (FIR) or an infinite impulse response (IIR) equalizer. This line-by-line processing (which can be implemented by periodic cleansing of the equalizer) overcomes the limitations of standard equalizers to allow for 40-50 dB of suppression of ghosts, even with nulls in the spectrum, as long as the ghost delay is less than the period of time without the analog signal. Furthermore, by using time inversion in combination with line-by-line processing, the stability problem of the conventional IIR equalizer is eliminated. The IIR equalizer may be implemented on a single digital integrated circuit. Alternatively, an FIR equalizer can be used which, although it may require multiple chips (i.e., more taps), can acquire and adapt to the ghosted channel more rapidly than an IIR equalizer. With line-by-line processing, FIR and IIR equalizers can eliminate any ghost with delays up to 11 .mu.sec in IDTV or EDTV. For larger delays, a standard IIR or FIR equalizer can be used as a preprocessor to eliminate small ghosts and an adaptive antenna can be used to eliminate large ghosts. Thus, with these techniques, the ghosting problem can be eliminated in all TV receivers.

    • A system and method for optimizing usage of a communications transmission medium. The transmission medium may be sliced into time and frequency domains so as to create time-frequency slices for assignment to users having varying access rates and user-application requirements. Through scheduling of the various speed users within the frequency and time domains, the system and method can efficiently allocate and make use of the available spectrum, thereby accommodating higher rate users requiring greater bandwidths and time slot assignments while still preserving cost-efficient access for lower speed users. Depending on the signal modulation scheme, the time-frequency slices may be allocated on non-contiguous frequency bands. The system and method is also applicable to code-division multiple access (CDMA) techniques by slicing the available code space along time-code domains, frequency-code domains or, in three dimensions, along time-frequency-code domains. Users may be efficiently scheduled based on code space requirements so as to optimize use of the communication medium.
