摘要： A document handling system is configured for processing a variety of different documents. The system includes an input receptacle for receiving a stack of documents, a standard sensor for scanning at least one non-color characteristic of the bills in the stack, a color sensor for scanning the color characteristics of the bills, and an output receptacle for receiving the bills after they have been processed. A transport mechanism is included for transporting bills, one at a time, from the input receptacle past the sensors to the output receptacle. An operator interface is provided for displaying information to an operator and inputting information to the system. A processor is also included for processing the data gathered from the sensors to evaluate the bills.

摘要： A batch of bills is received, transported, and imaged to produce image data. The image data is reproducible as a visually readable image of at least a portion of each of the plurality of currency bills. Each currency bill includes a respective serial number. The serial numbers are extracted from the image data for each of the currency bills. Each extracted serial number is compared with a plurality of serial numbers in a currency bill database to determine if a currency bill associated with an extracted serial number is a suspect currency bill. One of the plurality of currency bills is determined to be a suspect currency bill based on the comparing. In response to determining the suspect currency bill, at least a portion of the produced image data is displayed as a visually readable image of the suspect currency bill on a display unit of the document processing system.

摘要： A document processing system includes a communications port and a controller. The communications port is configured to communicatively couple the document processing system to a network and to receive a data file associated with a deposit amount. The data file includes customer deposit information associated with documents. The controller is configured to determine if any of the first plurality of documents are suspect documents based on a comparison of the customer deposit information with suspect information. The controller is configured to generate a credit instruction for an amount equal to a percentage of the deposit amount minus an amount associated with ones of the documents determined to be suspect documents. In response to the controller determining that one of the first plurality of documents is a suspect document, the controller is configured to transmit a notice over the network. The notice includes image data associated with the determined suspect document.

摘要： A method of detecting counterfeit bills includes the steps of determining the denomination of the bill being evaluated, generating data corresponding to the concentration of magnetic ink on the bill and comparing this data to the expected concentration of magnetic ink on a genuine bill of the same denomination. The bill is considered genuine if the data is within an acceptable range of the expected value. An apparatus for detecting counterfeit currency employs a microprocessor to control an optical scanning operation of the bill being evaluated and to generate image data that is compared to stored images corresponding to genuine denominations of currency. The denomination of the bill is determined by evaluating the correspondence between the image data and the stored images. The microprocessor also controls measurement of the concentration of magnetic ink on the bill and determines the genuineness of the bill by comparing the measured concentration of magnetic ink to the expected concentration for a bill of the same denomination. A signal indicative of whether the bill is genuine or counterfeit is generated by the microprocessor depending on whether the data is within a predetermined range of the expected value.

The currency evaluation machines utilize sensors to obtain information from the evaluated bills, and comparison tests are performed in which the sensor information is compared to master information in order to identify the denomination, series and authenticity of the currency bills being evaluated. A reviewable record of the comparison tests is maintained for each individual currency evaluation machine. After performing the comparison tests, evaluated bills are identified as either no call bills, suspect documents or genuine bills. Information associated with respective no call bills, suspect documents or genuine bills, including times of occurrence or quantities of no call bills, suspect documents or genuine bills, and/or denomination of suspect documents or genuine bills is recorded in the reviewable record. In one embodiment, the reviewable record is communicated from a network of individual currency evaluation machines to centralized controllers which maintain an aggregate record of information compiled from the individual machines.

摘要： A system for authenticating documents comprises in one embodiment an ultraviolet light source illuminating a document to be tested, an ultraviolet light detector for detecting the ultraviolet light reflected by the document and a signal processor for determining the authenticity of the document based upon an output signal of the ultraviolet light detector representing the amount of detected ultraviolet light. The document is considered genuine if the output signal is within a predetermined range of an expected value. In another embodiment, the system combines the ultraviolet light source and ultraviolet light detector with a visible light detector for detecting visible light emitted by the document. The signal processor receives signals from both the ultraviolet detector and the visible light detector and determines the authenticity of the document based upon signals representing the reflected ultraviolet light and detected visible light. The document is considered genuine if the output signal representing the detected ultraviolet light is within a predetermined range of an expected value and if the output signal representing the amount of visible light does not exceed a threshold value.
