    • A high power, low frequency flextensional transducer (50) for underwater use comprises a number of spaced piezo-electric element stacks (53) between opposed inserts (51, 52). A Kevlar (registered trademark) compression band (54) is wound around the stacks and inserts and then partly elliptical plaster formers (56) are attached. A filament wound elliptical GRP flexural shell (57) is then wound around the assembly while controlling the tension so as to provide the required pre-stress on the piezo-electric stacks (53) when cured. After curing the plaster formers (56) are removed. End-plates (16) are attached to the elliptical shell (57) to complete the transducer; the shell (11) having a compression bonded layer (61) of neoprene applied, including a peripheral serrated lip seal (62) to seal against the end-plate (16) while permitting flexing of the shell. A device to provide wide bandwidth performance is also disclosed. To extend the range of operational depths the cavity within the transducer is filled with a gas whose vapour pressure can be temperature-controlled.

    • An ultrasonic liquid delivery device in which a housing of the device has an internal chamber and at least one exhaust port in fluid communication with the internal chamber of the housing. A valve member is moveable relative to the housing between a closed position in which liquid is inhibited against exhaustion from the housing via the at least one exhaust port, and an open position in which liquid is exhaustable from the housing via the at least one exhaust port. An ultrasonic waveguide separate from the housing and valve member is disposed at least in part within the internal chamber of the housing to ultrasonically energize liquid within the internal chamber prior to liquid being exhausted from the housing in the open position of the valve member. An excitation device is operable in the open position of the valve member to ultrasonically excite the ultrasonic waveguide.

    • A flextensional sonar transducer assembly includes a stack of piezoelectric elements disposed along a linear axis, a plurality of electrodes disposed between the elements, end pieces disposed at each end of the piezoelectric stack, with the end pieces having outwardly facing, generally arcuate surfaces, a compression band formed into a loop to encircle the stack and end pieces, a flexural shell disposed to circumscribe the compression band to present a generally elliptical side cross-section, with the major axis thereof being generally coincident with the linear axis of the stack, and with the shell being reactively coupled to the arcuate end portions of the compression band, and rod members positioned between the compression band and the arcuate end portions of the band of material for maintaining driving contact between the shell and the end pieces, and for adjusting the prestress compression pressure in the stack. The invention also includes methods of manufacturing the transducer assembly.
