    • An abrasive-erosion resistant head gasket assembly includes a flat-elongated core, a sheet of composite gasket material on each face of the base, armor to seal the combustion chambers, and bodies of abrasive-erosion resistant elastomeric material at each end of the gasket assembly. The abrasive-erosion resistant bodies are selectively applied to the end zones of the gasket assembly where abrasive-erosion is normally at a maximum. The bodies resist abrasive-erosion. The bodies are applied to the facing material or in zones from which the facing materials have been removed and preferably are cured concurrently with the lamination and curing of the facing materials.

    • A multilayer engine gasket is provided for resisting scoring, scratching and fretting corrosion. The gasket includes a metal core or substrate, an intermediate phosphate layer and an exterior layer of anti-fretting material. The metal core is preferably formed of steel and is constructed and arranged to be mounted between an engine head and block of an internal combustion engine, such as a diesel engine. A pair of piston-size apertures and a plurality of oil and water passageways are defined in the metal core. The intermediate phosphate layer enhances the ability of the anti-fretting material to adhere to the gasket and provides and assists in resisting anti-fretting corrosion. The exterior layer of anti-fretting material is formulated from a ratio of from about 65 per cent to about 35 per cent polytetrafluoroethylene to a ratio from about 35 per cent to about 65 per cent molybdenum disulfide by weight. A separately screened-on silicone bead may optionally border the peripheral edges of the metal core so as to provide a peripheral seal.

    • An anaerobic sealant composition capable of polymerizing upon exclusion of air comprises (1) a polyacrylic ester monomer, (2) an inorganic salt initiator which can be a persulfate or a perchlorate of ammonium, alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, (3) a polymerization accelerator which can be a secondary or tertiary amine, a N,N-di(lower alkyl)amide of a monocarboxylic aliphatic acid, an organic carboximide of a polycarboxylic acid, or an organic sulfimide of a carboxylic acid, or mixtures of the foregoing (4) a N-nitrosoamine, and (5) a quinone-type polymerization inhibitor. The composition is prepared by compounding the aforementioned ingredients and suitably aging the resulting formulation.

    • An improved carbon-free force sensitive ink for a force sensor. The ink when deposited and dried can function at temperatures of up to 350.degree. F. and pressures of up to 10,000 psi. The preferred ink includes a thermoplastic polyimide binder, conductive particles, intrinsically semi-conductive particles, and dielectric particles, all of an average particle size of 1.0 micron or less. The preferred semi-conductive particles are molybdenum disulfide, ferric and ferrous oxide particles. The preferred conductive particles are conductive metal oxide compounds that deviate from stoichiometry based on an oxygen value of two, such as conductive tin oxide, Fe.sub.3 O.sub.4 iron oxide, and mixtures of them. The preferred dielectric particles are silica. The binder is present in an amount of 20 to 80% by volume. The sensor and a method of making the sensor are also disclosed.

    • A method of making a gasket assembly of enhanced sealing characteristics comprising the steps of providing a gasket body having an expansive metallic core and at least one compressible fiber-elastomer facing layer and defining at least one clear-through opening, providing a silk screen through which a fluid silicone sealant material is adapted to be squeezed in a desired sealing pattern onto the gasket body, squeezing through the silk screen a fluid, moisture-carbon dioxide curable, silicone sealant material which is curable in the presence of high humidity and carbon dioxide levels into a desired sealing pattern onto the facing layer without intervening barrier coats, preheating the gasket body to a temperature of from about 170.degree. F. to about 185.degree. F. for about 30 to 60 seconds without added moisture, positioning the patterned gasket body in a chamber, and exposing the gasket body in the chamber to a conditioned atmosphere of humidity of at least about 85% relative humidity and of a carbon dioxide volume percent of from about 9 to about 13%, for from about 5 to about 8 minutes, thereby to cure the silicone sealant material to form an elastomeric silicone sealing pattern on the gasket body.
