    • A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine, which make possible a defined and reliable cutting in or cutting off a gas-exchange valve of a cylinder. In at least one operating state, at least one intake valve or exhaust valve of a cylinder is cut off or at least one cut-off intake valve or exhaust valve of the cylinder is cut in again, the at least one intake valve or exhaust valve being opened and/or closed using an operating element; and the operating element being switched off or switched on again using a coupling element.
