    • A refractory conduit assembly for the transfer of molten steel from a discharge vessel to an ingot mold of a horizontal continuous casting plant includes a replaceable spout member adapted to be removably connected at a predetermined location to the refractory lining of a vessel. The spout member has therethrough a discharge channel to receive from the interior of the vessel a flow of molten steel. A shut off device is provided to interrupt the flow to the discharge channel. A casting tube has therethrough a flow passage with inlet and outlet ends. A coupling device connects the inlet end of the flow passage to the discharge channel, such that the flow of molten metal passes through the casting tube. The outlet end of the flow passage has an altered cross-sectional configuration adapted to that of the ingot mold. A nozzle has an inlet end connected to the casting tube and an outlet end having thereat a portion to sealingly contact walls of the ingot mold. The nozzle has therethrough a flow channel to pass the flow of molten steel from the casting tube to the ingot mold.

    • In order to be able to manipulate a feeding device with which molten steel is introduced into a twin-belt caster without ingress of air in preparation for the casting process and to carefully align the feeding device and the caster to the required extent, the feeding device includes a pouring body which is mounted in its own carriage so as to be rotatable about a horizontal pivot axis, and a separately movable tundish which is connected with the pouring body via a ball joint which forms the point of separation in that the ball socket of the ball joint and the ball pivot of the ball pivot are each respectively associated with either the tundish or the pouring body. The pouring body can be arrested in the manner of a rocker in different sloped positions and can be laterally displaced in a direction transverse to its longitudinal extent.The associated mode of operation of a feeding device equipped with a pouring body and tundish according to the apparatus of the invention comprises initially moving the spout of the pouring body between the mold walls of the twin-belt caster a few millimeters further than that corresponding to the casting position, thereafter moving the tundish in the direction toward the twin-belt caster and arresting the tundish in its casting position, and finally setting the pouring body back against the connecting surface of the tundish so as to establish an outwardly closed connection.

    • A feeding device for introducing molten steel into a twin-belt caster having mold walls which move exclusively in the casting direction. The feeding device comprises: a casting unit including a pouring pipe having a mouthpiece at one end which can extend between and form a sealing gap with the mold walls of a twin-belt caster, a first carriage moveable toward and away from a twin-belt caster and having the pouring pipe mounted thereon so that the pouring pipe is rotatable about a horizontal pivot axis and is laterally adjustable transversely to its longitudinal extent; a tundish mounted on a second carriage, which is disposed upstream of the first carriage and is independently moveable toward and away from the first carriage, so that the tundish is adjustable in height; and a compensating pipe for connecting the outlet of the tundish to the other end of the pouring pipe to permit molten steel to flow from the tundish through the pouring pipe. The compensating pipe has respective sealing surfaces at its opposed ends which respectively engage correspondingly shaped sealing surfaces on the other end of the pouring pipe and at the outlet of the tundish in a manner such that the engaging sealing surfaces are moveable relative to one another. The engaging sealing surfaces between the pouring pipe and the compensating pipe preferably form a ball joint and the engaging sealing surfaces between the compensating pipe and the tundish form a further ball joint or are two planar surfaces.

    • A continuous steel casting apparatus includes a casting nozzle, a mold surrounding the casting nozzle and having moving mold walls together defining a rectangular casting cross section and being formed of oppositely located, parallel-extending endless casting belts and oppositely located, parallel-extending endless lateral dams. A sealing assembly provides a seal between the casting nozzle and the mold walls. The sealing assembly includes sealing levers situated between the casting nozzle and the casting belts. The sealing levers are movably mounted on the casting nozzle. Each sealing lever has a sealing face oriented towards a respective casting belt and extending parallel to the width thereof. Further, each sealing lever is resiliently urged into a sealing engagement with the casting belts. Side surfaces of the sealing levers sealingly engage the dams.

    • A continuous casting apparatus for a metal casting arranged to compensate for shrinkage of the casting in a cross sectional plane of the casting normal to the casting direction. The apparatus includes a pair of endless casting belts each spaced from and facing the other to form respective mold walls and arranged for movement in the casting direction. A pair of endless articulated mold walls, each spaced from and facing the other, is disposed between the casting belts and arranged to move with the casting belts in the casting direction. The spacing between the articulated mold walls and between the casting belts is greater upstream than downstream relative to the casting direction. Each articulated mold wall includes a plurality of dam blocks. Each block has an inner face disposed at an angle relative to the casting belts and defining a surface of the casting transverse to the casting belts, and an outer face disposed at an angle relative to the casting belts and facing a direction opposite to that of the inner face. At least one of the faces of each dam block is adjustable in height between the casting belts. Guide means are provided for adjusting the height of the at least one face of each dam block.

    • A twin-belt continuous casting mold has a guide assembly for the casting belts; the guide assembly includes a plurality of support rollers arranged serially parallel to the casting direction and engaging each casting belt along the mold chamber, and additional ribbed supports transversely engaging each casting belt in a zone upstream of the first support roller as viewed in the casting direction. There is provided a first resilient holding arrangement for positioning each additional support and resiliently urging it into engagement with a respective casting belt. The support rollers form a first and a second group; the first group is situated in a zone of the mold entrance adjacent the respective additional ribbed support downstream thereof. The guide assembly further has a second resilient holding arrangement for positioning each support roller of the first group for resiliently urging each such support roller into engagement with a respective casting belt. The second group of support rollers is situated downstream of the first group and is rigidly held. Each roller of the first and second groups has a supporting portion provided with an arcuate outer contour being convex towards the mold chamber and being oriented parallel to the mold chamber width. There are further provided side dam support means, especially in the form of support rails or rolls, extending parallel to the casting direction and flanking the support rollers of the first group and engaging the casting belts in alignment with the side dams which laterally bound the mold chamber.

Each lateral support assembly comprises a plurality of serially-arranged rolling bodies and a guiding arrangement for guiding each rolling body for a rolling advancement in the casting direction through a length portion while contacting a respective casting belt and for returning each rolling body from a downstream end of the length portion to an upstream end thereof while being out of contact with and oriented away from the casting belt. The length portion extends substantially from the inlet of the mold chamber and has a length which is, at the most, one fourth of the length of the mold chamber. During the casting operation there is, at any time, a plurality of rolling bodies in contact with a respective casting belt along the casting direction.

    • A method of and apparatus for removing front and rear segments of rolled wire or wire rod which, in the form of winding packages, is supplied to the apparatus (connected before a collecting device) and is subdivided by separating procedures into good windings and scrap windings. The windings, which are placed in a spiral or helical manner around a guide element and are moved parallel to the longitudinal extension thereof, are severed in the transition region between the scrap windings of the front segment and the subsequent temporarily retained or stopped good windings, and the further conveyed scrap windings are removed from the region of the guide element after a separating or dividing procedure; later, the good windings are separated in the transition region to the subsequent temporarily retained or stopped scrap windings of the rear segment, and are moved toward the collecting device before releasing the scrap windings and before the latter are divided or separated and removed from the region of the guide element. The apparatus comprises at least one separating cutter; a plurality of scrap cutters subsequently connected in the direction of movement of the winding packages, the cutting edges of the scrap cutters being pivotally arranged in the region of the windings with respect to a guide element which movably supports the winding packages in the longitudinal direction; and two stop elements arranged sequentially in the direction of movement of the winding packages, these stop elements being movable toward the guide element and between two adjacent windings.
