    • Embodiments of the invention relate to a method and apparatus for continuously casting a metal slab. The method involves continuously introducing molten metal into an inlet of a casting cavity defined between advancing casting surfaces, cooling the metal in the cavity to form a metal slab, and discharging the slab from the cavity through an outlet. The casting surfaces have an ability to remove heat from the metal but this ability is reduced, thus reducing heat flux, for at least one of the casting surfaces in a region of the cavity spaced from both the inlet and the outlet and extending transversely to the casting direction. This reduced ability to remove heat is relative to such ability of the casting surface in immediately adjacent upstream and downstream regions of the cavity. The apparatus may be a twin belt caster or other form of continuous caster modified to perform the method.

    • There is provided a twin-belt casting machine which prevents an uneven cooling condition between the top surface and the bottom surface of a slab between a pair of endless belts disposed vertically. The twin-belt casting machine 1 comprises a pair of rotating belt units 3 including respective endless belts 2 and arranged up and down so as to face each other, a cavity 4 formed between the pair of rotating belt units 3, and cooling means 10 which is arranged inside the rotating belt unit 3. The twin-belt casting machine 1 continuously casts a slab S as a metal liquid is supplied in the cavity 4. The twin-belt casting machine 1 further comprises distance adjusting means which is arranged inside at least one of the pair of rotating belt units arranged up and down so as to face each other, and which moves apart or closer the endless belt relative to the slab S in accordance with a part where the slab and the endless belt become distant from each other.

    • A non-rotating, belt-levitating, cylindrical air-pillow apparatus supports and guides a moving, tensed, flexible, heat-conductive casting belt along a convex, cylindrically shaped path toward an entrance into a continuous casting machine. Pressurized air is applied in belt-levitating relation to the inner surface of the casting belt moving along the path. Stationary belt-guiding elements define the path. Pressurized air is fed through throttling passages communicating with regions between stationary elements or communicating with outwardly facing stationary plateau surfaces. A cylinder shell supports the stationary elements and is adjacent to a plenum chamber feeding pressurized air through throttling passages in the shell. Stationary elements of suitable, durable, wear-resistant, slippery material are mounted in grooves in the shell. The air-pillow apparatus includes belt coolant application deflector or nozzles.

    • Systems are provided for continuously casting metal product directly from molten metal confined and solidified in a casting region defined by upper and lower, cooled, endless, flexible, traveling, casting belts supported by belt support systems including back-up rollers in respective upper and lower carriages and laterally defined by first and second traveling side dams. The back-up rollers and belt support systems shape and maintain the casting region for improved heat transfer between cast metal and belts for improved product uniformity and enhanced machine performance. Several systems are disclosed including having one belt flexibly constrained, resulting in a transverse bowing away from the casting centerline due to liquid metal head, with the opposing belt being rigidly constrained and contoured or transverselybowed towards the casting centerline in a configuration that compensates for displacement of the flexibly constrained belt resulting in a uniform transverse cross section. Systems are disclosed including bowing the upper back-up rollers down either by manual adjustment or remote control and at the same time allowing the lower rollers to yield; intentionally rigidizing the upper and/or lower back-up rollers or sections thereof; bowing both sets of back-up roller in equal and opposite directions, bowing the rollers inward or outward using either manual adjustment or remote control tensioning; bending structural frame members which are in support relationship with rollers, thus maintaining predetermined configurations of rollers in contact with the belts and further including downstream tapering of the casting region.

    • The present invention comprises several embodiments of a continuous casting machine for uninterrupted continuous production of non-ferrous metals and alloys, the machine having a pair of endless flexible mold assemblies, including mold blocks abutting each other in end-to-end relationship and each having a mold channel in one face thereof, whereby coengaging straight sections of the assemblies of mold blocks form a continuous mold cavity, extending forward and downward from the inlet end at an angle to provide desirable flow levels at the inlet of the cavity, the length of mold blocks in one assembly being preferably half the length of the mold blocks in the other assembly and indexed so that the abutting faces of the blocks of one assembly occur intermediately of the blocks of the other assembly to prevent heat dams from occurring. Drive is provided for only the inlet end of the lower mold assembly to push the mold blocks in the lower assembly into firm engagement with each other to provide a relatively smooth surface for the molded continuous product. In another embodiment, endless metal strips are positioned in the bottoms of the cavities of the mold blocks for numerous advantages.

    • This disclosure relates to a method of and apparatus for continuously casting molten metal in a wheel-band type continuous casting machine, wherein the machine includes a casting mold the length of which may be changed with equal facility either when the machine is shut down or during the actual casting operation. The machine includes a plurality of guide wheels disposed at predetermined angular positions with resepct to the casting wheel for guiding the casting band about the casting wheel. The mold length is varied by synchronously moving at least two of the guide wheels into angular positions different from their initial angular positions, thereby varying the position of the mold outlet and thus changing the length of the mold. At least two of the guide wheels are moved either by means for rotating the wheel through an arc about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the casting wheel or by means translating the guide wheel along a line of motion perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the casting wheel.

    • Apparatus for continuously casting molten metal wherein an endless band is used to form a mold by enclosing a portion of the peripheral groove of the casting wheel of a wheel-band type casting machine. The endless band is guided about the periphery of the casting wheel by a plurality of band support wheels, at least two of which are provided with adjustable band positioning apparatus for maintaining the endless band in proper alignment over the casting wheel during casting. Each band support wheel is rotatably mounted on a shaft and is axially adjustable relative to its respective shaft for positioning the endless band laterally of the casting wheel. Each shaft is also adjustably pivotable about a point intermediate the shaft ends for skewing the band support wheel rotational axis relative to the casting wheel axis to steer the endless band into a substantially centered position over the casting wheel groove.
