    • An electromagnetic actuator is provided and includes upper and lower electromagnets. Each electromagnet includes a lamination core assembly comprising a plurality of individual stacked laminations. Upper and lower housings are provided, each having opposing end walls. The core assembly of the upper electromagnet is disposed between the end walls of the upper housing and the core assembly of the lower electromagnet is disposed between the end walls of the lower housing. An armature is mounted for movement between the core assemblies. Spacer structure is disposed between the core assemblies and contacts each of the core assemblies to prevent the core assemblies from moving towards each other. A pin provides a connection between a lamination core assembly and the end walls of an associated housing. Each housing has a contact surface between the end walls and each of the core assemblies includes a solid core member defining a central portion of each core assembly. Each of the solid core members is secured to a contact surface of an associated housing via at least one fastener.

    • A method of securing a core of an electromagnetic device to a housing assembly is provided. The core includes a stack of a plurality of laminations. Each of the laminations has a plurality of apertures extending therethrough which cooperate to define a plurality of apertures through the core. The core has generally planar ends. The housing assembly includes first and second housing portions constructed and arranged to receive the core. Each housing portion has first and second opposing surfaces with the first surface defining a generally planar contact surface. Each housing portion includes a recess extending inwardly from the contact surface and a plurality of apertures extending from the first surface to the second surface. The apertures in the housing portions are disposed at locations corresponding to locations of the apertures in the core. The method includes arranging the core between the first and second housing portions such that the apertures in the housing portions align generally with the apertures in the core. A fastener is then inserted through each of the apertures in the first housing portion, through each of the apertures in the core and through each of the corresponding apertures in the second housing portion in such a manner to secure the core to the first and second housing portions planar end.

    • A method of joining a connector 12 to an electromagnetic actuator 10 is provided. The actuator 10 has a metal housing structure 14, 18 and electrical leads 24, 26 extending from the housing structure. The method includes providing at least one channel 30 in the housing structure and a port 36 communicating with the at least one channel 30 and with a mounting surface 28 of the housing structure. The plastic connector 12 is molded on the mounting surface 28 and plastic material in fluid form is permitted to flow through the port 36 and into the at least one channel 30 to fill the channel and the port. The plastic material is permitted to cool and harden to define the connector 12 with the connector being interlocked with respect to the housing structure via the plastic material in the at least one channel 30.

    • An electromagnetic actuator for an internal combustion engine includes upper and lower electromagnets each having first and second opposing sides. First and second spacers are provided.     • An improved electromagnetically actuated valve is disclosed. The improved valve design includes a layer of structurally stable, non-magnetic material, preferably Kapton or Chrome, disposed intermediate the core element and the electromagnetic element of the valve, and a core element and electromagnetic element fabricated from a high electrical resistive iron material. The layer of non-magnetic structurally stable material and high resistance core element serve to eliminate the hysteresis effect in the magnetic force of the valve. The core element may also include radially extending or axially extending perforations through the core element. The axial and radial perforations serve to reduce the weight of the core design and the axial perforations serve to reduce the effect of the air spring created in the gap as the core element approaches the electromagnetic element during operation of the valve.
