    • A motion controlled handheld device includes a display having a viewable surface and operable to generate an image and a gesture database maintaining a plurality of predefined gestures. Each gesture is defined by a motion of the device with respect to a first position of the device. The device includes an application having a plurality of predefined commands and a motion detection module operable to detect motion of the handheld device within three dimensions and to identify components of the motion in relation to the viewable surface. The device includes a user interface operable to receive user input associating selected ones of the gestures with corresponding ones of the commands and a gesture mapping database comprising a command map for the application. The command map comprises mappings of the selected gestures to the corresponding commands as indicated by the user input. The device also includes a control module operable to load the application, to track movement of the handheld device using the motion detection module, to compare the tracked movement against the gestures to determine a matching one of the gestures, to identify, using the command map, the command mapped to the matching gesture, and to perform the identified command using the application.

    • A handheld device includes a display having a viewable surface and operable to generate an image indicating a currently controlled remote device and a gesture database maintaining a plurality of remote command gestures. Each remote command gesture is defined by a motion of the device with respect to a first position of the handheld device. The device includes a gesture mapping database comprising a mapping of each of the remote command gestures to an associated command for controlling operation of the remote device and a motion detection module operable to detect motion of the handheld device within three dimensions and to identify components of the motion in relation to the viewable surface. The device includes a control module operable to track movement of the handheld device using the motion detection module, to compare the tracked movement against the remote command gestures to determine a matching gesture, and to identify the one of the commands corresponding to the matching gesture. The device also includes a wireless interface operable to transmit the identified command to a remote receiver for delivery to the remote device.

    • A method and apparatus for improving the efficiency of a multi-band antenna in a wireless terminal over a wide range of frequencies is described herein. To compensate for the undesirable coupling that occurs in a low frequency band between a parasitic antenna and a primary antenna in certain designs, a matching network is connected to at least one ground port of the multi-band antenna. The matching network controls the multi-band antenna performance based on the current transmission frequency band. In some embodiments, the matching network is configured to operate as an open circuit when multi-band antenna operates in the low frequency band, and to operate as a short circuit when multi-band antenna operates in the high frequency band.

    • A voltage controlled oscillator, such as a VCXO (Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator), for generating a desired reference frequency in a wireless terminal with a reduced start-up time is described herein. According to the present invention, the VCXO comprises an oscillator that generates the desired reference frequency based on a variable voltage applied to the oscillator by a voltage controller. In addition, the VCXO includes a start-up controller that applies a bias voltage to an oscillator input node to reduce a capacitance associated with the oscillator, and therefore, to reduce the start-up time without negatively impacting the DC current consumption or the tuning range of the VCXO.

    • A system and method for suppressing spurious signal leakage in a mobile terminal antenna interface without degrading switch linearity or system insertion loss is disclosed. The antenna interface includes an antenna port, a receive port, a transmit port, and a plurality of switch modes, that may include a receive mode, a transmit mode, and a special isolation mode. To suppress spurious signal leakage from high band transmit and receive ports, a switching mechanism is employed to isolate the receive port from the antenna port in high band transmit mode, and to isolate the transmit port from the antenna port in high band receive mode. A special isolation mode allows simultaneous isolation of the high band transmit and receive ports from the antenna port in low band transmit and receive modes. DC current control circuitry is optionally employed to reduce current drain in transmit and special isolation modes, extending battery life.

Antenna matching can be engaged, disengaged, or switched as needed depending on whether a movable cover or clam-shell portion of a mobile terminal is open or closed. A switch can connect a single matching network to a radiating element in one case, and disconnect the single matching network from the radiating element in the other case. Alternatively, the switch can connect one matching network to the radiating element to achieve one matched condition, and the other matching network to the radiating element to achieve the other matched condition. In other embodiments, a switchable matching arrangement can alter the signal and/or ground feed points of an antenna. The technique can be applied to planar, fixed external, or collapsible antennas.
