摘要： An image processing apparatus and method include a plurality of different background suppression data acquisition modes selectable by a user in order to obtain background suppression data from a document being reproduced. The obtained background suppression data is used by an image processing unit to suppress the background region of the document being reproduced. The user is able to select one of the plurality of background suppression data acquisition modes depending upon the user's desire for high speed document reproduction versus the required quality of background suppression. In this manner, the user is able to determine whether document reproduction speed or background suppression quality is to be emphasized. The user's choice of a background suppression data acquisition mode is selectively overridden if the image processing apparatus determines that a more performance-intensive background suppression data acquisition mode may be implemented to improve background suppression quality without an associated loss of document reproduction speed.

The system includes a scanner for generating an image data stream representing an electronic image of the image on the input document and an edge detecting circuit for detecting edge data within the image data stream. A circuit detects a first corner of a leading edge of the input document based on the detected edge data and for establishing a first coordinate value therefrom and a second corner of a leading edge of the input document based on the detected edge data and for establishing a second coordinate value therefrom. The system further determines a minimum and maximum location for a leading edge of the scanned document and determines a minimum and maximum location for a trailing edge of the scanned document. An image window is generated representing valid image data to processed and rendered based on the minimum and maximum location for a leading edge of the scanned document, the minimum and maximum location for a trailing edge of the scanned document, the first coordinate value, and the second coordinate value.

The positions of two diagonally-opposite corners of the original are determined based on a fixed platen reference point. The size and position of either one selected page or both pages are determined based on the two original corner positions. When the image of only one selected page is desired, the image of the selected page is formed by cropping the original image based on the size and position of the selected page. The black to white transition may represent a transition from an overscan area of a platen to a document. The white to black transition may represent a transition from the document to the overscan area of the platen. By detecting at least one of the black to white transition and the white to black transition, the document width may be determined. By determining the document width, the document size may be identified.

The system includes a scanner for generating an image data stream representing an electronic image of the image on the input document and an edge detecting circuit for detecting edge data within the image data stream. A circuit calculates a skew angle of the input document based on the detected edge data and rotates the electronic image based on the calculated skew angle to register the electronic image with an output medium. The system also includes a non-image area generating circuit for generating areas in the electronic image which correspond to non-image areas based on the calculated skew and detected edge data. The skew calculation, rotation operation and the non-image area generation is based the electronic detection of the corners and center of the leading edge of the document being scanned.
