    • A technique is disclosed for achieving critical alignment of optical and mechanical elements, in which one of the foregoing is movable with respect to the other. Specifically, an optical fiber (12) is aligned with respect to a movable member (19) in a first position. The movable member is then displaced to a second position and high levels of radiant energy at a first discernible wavelength are transmitted down the fiber optic path to alter, or pattern, a wavelength sensitive surface area or coating (16) on the surface of the movable member. The movable member is then freed, and radiant energy of a second wavelength to which the coating is insensitive is used to sense the position of the movable member with respect to the fiber optic.

    • An e-commerce outsourcing system and method provides hosts with transparent, context-sensitive e-commerce supported pages. A plurality of visually perceptible elements associated with and identifying a source of a host's web page are stored in the form of data in a computer database for future use. The host includes one or more links within a page on the host website that correlate with a selected commerce object, which may be contextually related to material in the page. The commerce object can be a buying opportunity for a product of a third-party merchant, a product category containing a plurality of products of third-party merchants, or a dynamic selection indicator of a merchant's product. A plurality of hosts may choose to link to the same commerce object. Upon activation of the link displayed by a particular host website, a visitor computer is served with a page displaying the visually perceptible elements associated with that specific host's website and information associated with the commerce object correlated to the link. Where the commerce object is a dynamic selection indicator, the content is selected at the time of activation based upon an analysis of the page containing the activated link.

    • An inserter/extractor apparatus for inserting and extracting objects from bins located at different heights in a carousel including a vertical frame and an inserter/extractor carriage that is vertically movable along the frame and has a pair of gripping pads that have opposed, high friction gripping surfaces. The gripping pads apply a predetermined force to an object between them when stopped from further movement along the second horizontal axis by the object between them.

    • The invention of the present document is an improved disc singulator (10) for use in singulating and delivering to a test site (12) an integrated circuit device (14) to be tested by a tester mechanism. The singulator (10) includes structure to positively hold the device (14) within slots (64) formed in the periphery (52) of the disc (10) as it is rotated. A main body portion (16) of the device (14) is, thereby, held so that a plane defined by the main body (16) is oriented generally orthogonal to a plane defined by the disc (10). Additionally, the device (14) is held at an appropriate radial location with respect to the disc (14) so that, as the disc (10) rotates the device (14) carried thereby through a slit (40) in a printed circuit board (36) at the test site (12), contacts (26) of the device (14) will engage corresponding probes (38) at the test site (12). A wire spring (124) is employed to orient the main body portion (16) of the device (14) within a slot (64) in the disc (10) to prevent canting of the device (14). A plunger (86) and latch (132) are employed to assure proper radial positioning.

    • Flexible bearings of the type constructed of alternate, clyindrical layers of rigid material, or shims, and elastomer bonded together are made substantially free of internal, tensile stresses by making the walls of the shims wedge-shaped and by alternating the thin and thick ends of adjacent shims. As the elastomer cures and cools during manufacture of the bearing, it typically shrinks in volume, causing residual tensile stresses in prior-art cylindrical bearings. However, this shrinkage causes the shims of the present invention to move together axially, thus relieving the stress. If there is an odd number of shims, there is no axial displacement of the inner mounting ring of the bearing relative to the outer mounting ring, as a result of elastomer shrinkage. Alternatively, all shims may be initially held out of alignment, so that shrinkage of the elastomer will pull them into alignment.
