    • A battery interface assembly for a communication device (100), such as a portable radio, is provided to ensure a reliable interconnection between battery contacts (230) and radio contacts (108). Communication device (100) includes a casting (110) having a cavity (112) with two apertures formed therein (114, 228). The two apertures (114, 228) open into the cavity (112) to provide a point of contact for mating radio contacts (108) to the battery contacts (230). The battery contacts (230) are wiping contacts which mate with the radio contacts (108) as the battery is slid into the casting (110). A compression seal (126) is provided to the radio contacts (108) while a radial seal (120) is provided about the battery contacts (230) to ensure reliable electrical and physical connection under a variety of environments.

    • A rotary control assembly (200) for a handheld two-way radio (100) provides improved tactile feedback in the form of clicks, even during gloved usage. Assembly (200) includes a housing having a large control knob (108), a rotary switch control (202) having a shaft (204), a shaft extender (206) having a toothed gear element (210), and a ball plunger (302). As the control knob (108) is rotated, the shaft extender (206), toothed gear element (210) and shaft (204), all turn in cooperation. The toothed gear element (210) is loaded by the ball plunger thereby generating a clicking tactile feedback in response to the control knob (108) being rotated. A large control knob (108), suitable for a ruggedized environment, can thus be used in conjunction with a small rotary switch control (202) for improved tactile feedback while maximizing internal space efficiency.

A feedback system (120) is preferably included to provide for precise motion control.

    • A latching mechanism is provided. The latching mechanism includes a first member (2) having a first catch (4) and lateral catches (6), and a second member (1) having a notch (7) and lateral catches (8). In a first position, the first catch of the first member engages the notch of the second member. In a second position, the lateral catches of the first member engage the lateral catches of the second member. Further, when in the first position, the first catch and the notch are disengaged by squeezing one of the members at lateral points while sliding the members relative to one another until the lateral catches are engaged and the members are in the second position. Also provided is a battery pack (1, 2) having such a latching mechanism. Additionally, there is provided an electronic device that includes an operational unit (3), a tray (2) for holding battery cells, and a cover (1). The tray is removably coupled to the operational unit, and the cover is removably coupled to the tray. In an operating position, the operational unit is latched to the tray, and the cover is latched to the tray. The cover can be slid from the operating position to a maintenance position in which the cover and tray are coupled together so that either the tray and cover can be removed from the operational unit together, or the cover can be slid further and removed from the tray while the tray remains latched to the operational unit.

    • A carry case and electronic accessory assembly (100) provides direct interconnection between an external electronic accessory (104) and a portable radio (202) with minimal use of interface contacts. The external electronic accessory (104) includes a remote accessory (114) attached to a connector (106) having a substantially rigid portion (108) and a pivotal portion (110). The substantially rigid portion (108) attaches to the carry case housing (102) and provides a retention means within which the pivotal portion (110) can move. The pivotal portion (110) latches to the radio (202) to provide direct electrical contact between accessory contacts (124) of the external electronic accessory (104) and the radio contacts (204) of portable radio (202).
