    • A toilet bowl-mounted urinalysis unit (14) adapted to be readily mounted to a standard water closet bowl fixture (12) for sampling and analysis of urine at a toilet. The unit (14) includes a substantially self-contained housing (22) which is designed to be mounted on the upper surface of the standard bowl fixture (12) between the bowl (16) and the flushing water supply section (18). Hinged to the housing (22) is a toilet seat (24) to which is mounted a urine sampling device (26) designed such that urine excreted into the bowl (16) is sampled in mid-air within the inner space of the bowl. The housing (22) receives a urinalysis device (50) with a polarographic flow cell and a syringe pump (52) for transferring a urine sample to the flow cell together with a carrier liquid. The polarographic flow cell has a working electrode supporting an enzyme. In one embodiment, a reservoir for the carrier liquid is received within the housing (22). In another embodiment, the carrier liquid reservoir (402) is mounted to a toilet lid. A method for reforming a toilet equipped with a standard bowl fixture (12) into a toilet equipped with a urinalysis function is also provided wherein a prefabricated toilet seat assembly (28) having the urine sampling device (26) incorporated in advance into the toilet seat (24) is used.

    • A method and an apparatus (26) for sampling urine at a toilet equipped with a standard water closet bowl fixture. An elongated urine sampling vessel (96) extending transversely of the bowl fixture is used. While supported in such a manner that the axis thereof extends horizontally and perpendicular to the vertical central plane of the bowl fixture, the urine sampling vessel (96) is moved along the inner surface of the bowl (16) of the fixture and is brought to an optimum sampling position in the bowl space (16A). As the urine sampling vessel is adapted to any fore-and aft and lateral deviation of the direction of urination of an individual, urine is effectively sampled even by a sampling vessel which is small in size. The sampling vessel (96) is mounted to an end of a swing arm (94) having a horizontal pivot axis. In a simplest form of embodiment, only rotational movement is imparted to the swing arm (94). In a more sophisticated embodiment, the sampling vessel is brought to the sampling position by the rotational and translational movements of the swing arm. After use, the sampling vessel is stored in a washing chamber (162) substantially concealed by the frontal part of a toilet seat (24) and is washed by water under pressure ejected from a spray nozzle (184). In a preferred embodiment, a urine sampling apparatus (26) is mounted to the toilet seat.

    • A method and an apparatus (30) for sampling urine at a toilet (10) equipped with a standard water closet bowl fixture (12). An elongated, curved, urine sampling trough (32) having a U-shaped cross-section is used. For sampling of urine, the sampling trough (32) is positioned in the vertical central plane (46) of the toilet bowl fixture in such a manner that it extends obliquely between the upper front region and the bottom region of the inner space of the bowl (14). As the urine sampling trough (32) covers a substantial length in the vertical direction as well as in the fore-and-aft direction, the urine column hits on the sampling trough even when the trajectory of urine column is fluctuated in the vertical or fore-and-aft direction, whereby urine is effectively sampled. As the urine sampling trough is elongated and curved, it can be readily stored under the toilet seat when not in use.

    • A sub-delay element has the same configuration as that of a main delay element, and applies a delay τ that corresponds to a bias voltage to a selected clock signal output from a first selector. A phase detectorgenerates a phase detection signal that corresponds to the phase difference between a selected clock signal that has propagated through the sub-delay element and a selected clock signal that has propagated through a bypass path. A counter performs a count operation according to the phase detection signal. A D/A converter supplies a bias voltage that corresponds to the count value of the counter to the main delay element and the sub-delay element. An initialization unit instructs a DLL circuit to actually operate, and sets the reference voltage to be supplied to the D/A converter based upon the fluctuation in the count value of the counter.

    • A power supply device supplies power to an image forming apparatus. The image forming apparatus includes a load and a control unit. The load requires power, and is controlled by the control unit. The power supply includes a capacitor and a power-supply unit. The capacitor is charged by an external power source, and dischargably stores therein power. The power-supply unit provides power supply from the capacitor to the load and the control unit before voltage of the external power source drops below a threshold level where malfunction of the image forming apparatus occurs. After the voltage recovers to the threshold level, the power-supply unit stops the power supply from the capacitor.

    • An access point performing a communication with a wireless terminal performing a communication according to a predetermined wireless communication specification acquires a connection parameter required for a communication based on the predetermined wireless communication specification from a connection parameter server which can be connected thereto through a network. The access point sets an access point connection parameter in the access point itself. The wireless terminal acquires a wireless terminal connection parameter by using a communication method not requiring setting from the access point in advance and sets it in the wireless terminal itself. This completes the setting for performing a communication based on the predetermined wireless communication specification and it is possible to start a communication based on the predetermined wireless communication specification between the wireless and access point. Thus, it is possible to set a connection parameter for a wireless communication in the wireless terminal and access point without requiring a complicated setting work by a user.

    • When an operation mode of an image forming apparatus returns from an energy-saving mode to a regular operation mode, a CPU of a main system outputs a power control signal set to High, and determines the necessariness of information display on an LCD of an operation unit control system to output a starting mode selection signal set to High when the result of the determination is positive. A CPU of the operation unit control system detects the state of a power control signal, and detects mode return from the energy-saving mode depending on the result of the above detection. The CPU of the operation unit control system also detects the state of a starting mode selection signal, and determines the necessariness of information display on the LCD depending on the result of the detection to carry out a display process depending on the result of the determination.
