    • A media stackloader processes removable data storage media such as optical disks, magnetic diskettes, or tape media. The stackloader removably couples to a storage drive, such as by plugging into a slot of the host computer. The stackloader has a plug portion integral with a housing portion, the plug portion plugging into the host computer and the housing portion housing a magazine containing the removable media. The stackloader includes a device for moving the magazine vertically within the housing to align selected cartridges with an opening in one of the drives of the personal computer. After the cartridge is aligned, a device is employed for moving the cartridge horizontally into the drive for processing and, after processing, for withdrawing the cartridge from the drive back into the magazine. A locking mechanism selectively locks and unlocks the cartridges to prevent improper removal of cartridges from the magazine. Another aspect of the invention includes a method for operating a media stackloader, supporting operations needed to add new cartridges to a magazine, remove existing cartridges, read data from a cartridge, write data to a cartridge, audit the status of cartridges in a magazine, and aid the operator in exchanging mounted magazines and cartridges with different, un-mounted magazines or cartridges.

    • A media stackloader for processing media in one or more drives of a personal computer is provided where the stackloader plugs into a half slot or full slot (51/4) inch of the personal computer. The stackloader has a plug portion which is integral with a housing portion, the plug portion plugging into the slot and the housing portion housing a magazine which contains media, such as optical disk cartridges. The stackloader is provided with a device for moving the magazine vertically within the housing to align selected cartridges with an opening in one of the drives of the personal computer. After the cartridge is aligned, a device is employed for moving the cartridge horizontally into the drive for processing and, after processing, for withdrawing the cartridge from the drive back into the magazine. A device is provided for locking and unlocking the cartridges, the operator unlocking the cartridges when it is desired to remove from or add cartridges to the magazine. In the preferred embodiment the stackloader receives its power from the personal computer and employs an autochanger controller which is connected to a microprocessor on the mother board of the personal computer via a SCSI interface. The autochanger controller operates the devices for vertically moving the magazine and horizontally moving the cartridges as well as operating sensing and indicating functions. The stackloader enables a small user to operate a mini-library of cartridges in a standard home type personal computer.

    • An intelligent bus listening device, and a method which may be implemented as a computer program product, listens to SCSI commands on a first SCSI bus of a SCSI system via a listening connection to the first SCSI bus. The listening device is separately coupled via an interface to a second bus for communicating commands onto the second bus. A processor is coupled to the listening connection and to the second bus interface, the processor receiving the first commands from the first SCSI bus, converting the first commands to second commands related to the first commands, and providing the second commands to the second bus interface. In a SCSI library that accesses media from storage shelves with an autochanger in response to access commands from hosts, the intelligent bus listening device decouples the first SCSI bus from the autochanger, listens to commands on the first SCSI bus, and converts the access commands to a more efficient set of movement commands, and supplies the movement commands on a separate second bus for the autochanger.
