    • A method for providing a storage area network includes receiving, at a data storage node, data from a number of storage area network (SAN) servers via associated local nodes coupled to a optical network. The data is received at a plurality of transmitting wavelengths, where each local node is assigned a different transmitting wavelength. The method also includes storing the received data at the data storage node and sending acknowledgement messages to SAN servers to indicate receipt of the data. The acknowledgement messages are sent via the local nodes at a single receiving wavelength and each local node is configured to receive this receiving wavelength. The method may also include receiving, at the data storage node, a request for data stored at the data storage node from any of SAN servers via the associated local node at the assigned transmitting wavelength of the associated local node. Furthermore, the method may include sending the requested data from the data storage node to the requesting SAN sever via the associated local node at the receiving wavelength.

    • An optical network is provided that carries optical traffic in multiplexed wavelengths between a number of nodes. The network includes at least one light-trail associated with one of the wavelengths and established between a subset of the nodes in the network. The network also includes an out-of-band control channel that is associated with a different wavelength than the light-trail. The control channel is used to communicate control messages to establish the light-trail and to allocate use of the light-trail by the subset of nodes. Each of the subset of nodes comprises a burstponder operable to receive data traffic from one or more client devices of the associated node to be communicated over the light-trail and to buffer the received data traffic and assemble the data traffic into an optical payload. The burstponder is also operable to transmit the optical payload over the light-trail as optical traffic using a burst mode transmitter during a time period in which the associated node is allocated use of the light-trail.

    • An optical network is disclosed that carries optical traffic in multiplexed wavelengths between a number of nodes. The network includes at least one light-trail associated with one of the wavelengths and established between a convener node and an end node, and including one or more intervening nodes. The network also includes an out-of-band control channel that is associated with a different wavelength than the light-trail. The control channel is used to communicate control messages to establish the light-trail and to allocate use of the light-trail by the convener node and the intervening nodes. Each of the convener node, the one or more intervening nodes, and the end node is operable to receive optical traffic in a number of multiplexed wavelengths from the optical network, drop a first copy of the multiplexed optical traffic from the optical network, and forward a second copy of the multiplexed optical traffic on the optical network. These nodes also forward the optical traffic in selected wavelengths of the dropped first copy for communication to one or more client devices associated with the node. The nodes further convert traffic received from one or more client devices of the node into client optical traffic in one or more wavelengths, passively add the client optical traffic to the second copy or to a modification of the second copy to form a combined signal, and forward the combined signal to the network.

    • A method for shared mesh restoration includes configuring a switch to allow sharing of a plurality of backup line cards across a plurality of node degrees associated with a reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM). The switch is communicatively coupled to the ROADM. The method further includes configuring a number of backup line cards coupled to the switch. The number of backup line cards is based on determining a number of active backup lightpaths for each of a plurality of network failures associated with each of the plurality of node degrees of the ROADM, identifying which node degree and failure has the largest number of active backup lightpaths for all of the plurality of node degrees of the ROADM and for each of the plurality of network failures, and determining the number of backup line cards to configure based on the identified largest number of active backup lightpaths.
