    • When employing HARQ in soft handover (SHO) in a mobile communication system, a mobile station in communication with multiple base stations is signaled by each of the base stations when a packet sent by the mobile station is correctly received. However, while one or more base stations may have received the transmission correctly, others may not have, and retransmission may be called for. To address the possibility of having to resend such a packet, the mobile station of the invention retransmits only if a selected number of the base stations received the transmission incorrectly and does not if at least one base station received the original transmission correctly. The mobile transmits at a rate selected according to a rule from data rate information or signaling received from one or more of the base stations. The network is then able to retrieve the packet from one or more of the base stations which have received it correctly and to supply it to another or others which have not.

    • This invention addresses the problem of latency of response regarding information relying on an IMEISV from a CN. This is possible by defining the early RRC connection bits' indication to determine the supported signalling schemes and providing the IMEISV information from the terminal to the network. After this point the CN is able providing this mapping information to the radio access network before actual radio links are utilized. The idea here is for early RRC message information to be used for indicating what version of bitmap correction terminal capabilities refers to and what procedures can be utilized while waiting for this bit map information from the CN. Using this approach the length of the early RRC message can be kept short, the content of corrections can be well defined saving signalling bits, and the concern of a fast available indication on the connection set-up phase can still be addressed.

    • The method according to the invention is intended to be applied in a situation where the power level of the signals transmitted by that mobile network to which the terminal is connected sink below predetermined threshold levels. Then the terminal is arranged to measure the power levels of signals transmitted by the base stations of at least one second system. The method according to the invention comprises advantageously steps in which the cellular radio system at first transmits to the terminal at least one threshold value. Then the terminal measures the strength of the signal transmitted by at least one base station and compares the measured signal strength with said threshold value. If the signal strength of the received signal is lower than said threshold value the transmission mode is changed to a mode where the measurement of the signals of a second system can be performed. A terminal according to the invention comprises advantageously means with which the steps of the method presented above can be performed.
