    • A two-dimensional direct memory access system that maximizes processing resources in image processing systems. The present invention includes a two-dimensional direct memory access machine. Also, it employs a ping-pong style memory buffer to assist in the transfer and management of data. In certain applications of the invention, the type of data used by the invention is image data. The two-dimensional direct memory access machine transfers a specific cross sectional area of the image data to a processor. The efficient method of providing the processor only with the specific cross sectional area of the image data that is to be processed at a given time provides decreased processing time and a better utilization of processing resources within the two-dimensional direct memory access system. The present invention may be contained in a variety of image processing systems operating as either a peripheral or a stand alone device including but not limited to color photo-copy machines, color facsimiles, color printers, black and white printers, digital cameras, and digital printers. In certain embodiments, the two-dimensional direct memory access system exchanges image data between random access memory and a digital signal processor using the two-dimensional direct memory access machine and the ping-pong style memory buffer.

    • K replacement for color digital image printing reduces the computational complexity and processing resource requirements of an image printing system. The invention is implemented using a variety of devices capable of reproducing image data including color photo-copy machines, color facsimiles, color printers, black and white printers, and digital printers. The image printing system is employed in a multi-functional peripheral capable of performing several functions. The image printing system detects whether or not ink is to be printed using all of the available print channels in the system. If ink is to be printed using a predetermined number of the print channels, the image printing system performs K replacement and applies error diffusion to a predetermined number of the print channels. In certain embodiments, K replacement is performed only when the spectral content of a given pixel falls within a predetermined range of a spectrum. This spectrum may be a color spectrum wherein the spectrum varies across the entire visible spectrum. Alternatively, the spectrum can be an intensity spectrum wherein the spectrum varies from a highest intensity to a lowest intensity.

    • An image processing system uses probability error diffusion, and is implemented using a variety of devices capable of reproducing image data including color photo-copy machines, color facsimiles, color printers, black and white printers, and digital printers. The image processing system is employed in a multi-functional peripheral capable of performing several functions. The image processing system identifies which channels in a printing device will print a pixel, and applies error diffusion to those channels. The image processing system determines characteristics of the pixel and subsequently calculates a pixel placement probability, and then applies the error diffusion to the pixel placement probability. Error diffusion may also be applied to a difference between the pixel placement probability and a print probability.
