    • A display optical system for guiding light from an original picture to an eye of an observer or a surface to have an image projected thereon is provided with a first optical system and a second optical system. The first optical system is provided with a first surface that is formed on a transparent body and has at least a reflecting action, a second surface for reflecting light reflected on the first surface toward the first surface again, and a third surface that is formed on the transparent body in the same manner as the first surface and transmits the light from the original picture. The light transmitted through the third surface travels toward the first surface and reflected for the first time on the first surface. In addition, a principal ray at central angle of view to be reflected for the last time on the first surface is reflected and travels to a side opposite to a side of the first reflection on the first surface with respect to a normal line of a surface on a hit point thereof. With such a structure, a small display optical system that is capable of widening an angle of view is realized.

    • A composite display apparatus has a display device for displaying image information, a display optical system for guiding light from the display device to the eye of an observer, and an image pickup optical system for focusing light from the outside on an image pickup device. An optical axis of the image pickup optical system is substantially aligned with an axis that is an extension of the eye-ball optical axis in an optical path of the display optical system. The apparatus further has an optical path separating element for separating an optical path of the image pickup optical system from the optical path of the display optical system. Each of the display optical system and the image pickup optical system has a plurality of decentered reflective surfaces having curvature. The light from the display device is alternately folded in directions along the eye-ball optical axis by the plurality of reflective surfaces of the display optical system to be guided to the eye. The light from the outside is alternately folded in directions different from an observation direction by the plurality of reflective surfaces including the optical path separating element. The image pickup optical system has a stop and a rear optical system placed behind the stop. The image pickup optical system also has a surface having a negative power and a surface having a positive power in that order toward the stop in the optical path before the stop. The rear optical system is a refracting optical system or a reflecting optical system having a positive power.

Each of the image observation devices includes an image pickup system which forms an image on a image pickup device using an image pickup optical system, and a display system which guides the light from the image acquired by the image pickup system to an observers eye by a display optical system. Each of the image observation devices is arranged so that the outside optical axis of the image pickup optical system is approximately aligned with an extension line of the eye-side optical axis of the display optical system. In the image observation system, the image pickup device included in the image pickup system of each image observation device is shifted horizontally by a predetermined distance relative to the optical axis of the image pickup optical system, and the display element is shifted horizontally by a predetermined distance relative to the optical axis of the display optical system. The optical axes of the image pickup optical systems and the optical axes of the display optical systems in the pair of image observation devices for the left and right eyes are parallel to each other.
