    • A self-propelled musical toy rolling ball which plays musical tunes and sound effects. The ball may also include decorative images on its surface which may generally correspond to the musical tune or sound effects played by the ball. The electronics of the ball, once energized, operate to propel the ball and simultaneously activate an integrated circuit sound effects chip which plays first sound sequence, typically a musical tune. When the ball bumps into a wall or other object, the propulsion mechanism, typically a drive motor which may be transmissivly connected to a central axis shaft, is disengaged and the circuit then plays a second sound sequence, typically a randomly selected pre-programmed sound effect from one of a plurality of different sounds. Thereafter, the propelling mechanism is again activated and the ball resumes playing the musical tune.

    • A motorizd toy car which upon frontal impact with a wall or other obstruction simulates a crash and its consequences. The wheeled car is provided with a chassis on which a hollow body is mounted, the body being defined by a front hood section having a simulated bumper prow, an intermediate cockpit section accommodating a hinged side door, and a rear trunk section having a trunk lid hinged thereon. The intermediate and rear sections are formed of rigid material and are attached to the chassis, whereas the front section which is formed of resilient material is free of the chassis. Slidable along the chassis is a sled whose front end is attached to the prow of the front body section, a coil spring urging the sled to a retracted position in which the front section is deformed to assume a crushed appearance. The side door and the trunk lid are operatively coupled to the sled so that when these components are manually swung from their fully open to their closed positions, the sled is then caused to advance against the action of the spring to an extended position which is held by a spring-biased detent. In this extended position the car assumes its normal appearance in which the front body section is undeformed. Upon impact, the shock thereof releases the detent which frees the sled to return to its retracted position to impart a crushed appearance to the front section of the body, the door and lid then being outflung to simulate a crash. By again closing the door and lid, the normal appearance of the car is restored, thereby making it possible to repeatedly "crash" the toy car.

    • A toy vehicle having a rear hitching element engageable by a dynamic coupler at one end of a sled-type trailer which may be more or less loaded by a player. The coupler is attached to a spring-biased piston slidable within a box projecting from the trailer whereby the extent to which the piston is withdrawn from the box when the trailer is hauled by the work vehicle depends on the magnitude of the load placed on the trailer. Operatively coupled to the piston is a load-indicating meter whose reading not only tells the player how great a load has been placed on the trailer, but also indicates the ability of the vehicle to haul this load, for the meter pointer will not move beyond the point at which the vehicle is stalled.

    • A wrist-borne launcher for a toy vehicle having a road-engaging flywheel mounted on an axle, one end of which extends through the bearing of a false wheel and terminates in a male coupler coaxial with a ring on the outer hub thereof. When not in use, the vehicle is held on a platform having a battery compartment, the platform being provided at its underside with a wrist-engaging cuff. Wires from the battery compartment pass through an arm cantilevered from the platform to reach over the hand of the player. The wires are connected to an electric motor housed in a power box supported at the free end of the arm, a depressible switch being connected in series with the motor. The shaft of the motor terminates in a female coupler coaxially disposed within a cylindrical socket formed in the side of the box corresponding to the underside of the platform, a switch actuator being interposed between the female coupler and the rim of the socket. When the player removes the vehicle from the platform and pushes the false wheel against the power box so as to telescope the hub ring within the socket, the male coupler then engages the female coupler and the ring depresses the switch actuator to activate the motor, thereby driving the flywheel. When the flywheel is revved up, the player then releases the vehicle onto a road surface to permit the vehicle to speed away from the launcher.

    • A toy work vehicle propelled by a bi-directional d-c motor in a forward or reverse direction depending on the polarity of battery voltage applied thereto, the vehicle including a power take-off device driven by the same motor to raise or lower a load. A gear shift mechanism operatively coupled either to the wheel axles or to the power take-off device, is controlled by a shift stick which in neutral operatively couples the motor only to the power take-off device. The shift stick is movable to a lateral position having a forward and a reverse mode in which the motor is operatively coupled to the wheel axles. The shift stick also cooperates with a slide carrying the movable contacts of a polarity-reversing switch connecting the battery to the motor such that when the stick is in neutral the motor is disconnected; when the stick is in the forward mode, the battery voltage is applied in a polarity causing forward motion of the wheels; and when the stick is in the reverse mode, the polarity is reversed to cause reverse wheel motion. Coacting with the switch slide is a power take-off lever having a forward and back position such that when the shift stick is in neutral and the lever is in its forward mode, this causes the motor to drive the power take-off device to raise the load, and when the shift stick is in neutral and the lever is in its back mode, this causes the device to lower the load.
