In a filtering apparatus for liquids of the type in which the liquid has a straight-through flow through fine slots formed between the inner and outer edges of a series of parallel, coaxial, framelike filter elements 14, 16 of similar shape, adjacent elements 14, 16 being of different sizes and similarly disposed with respect to each other, the axial spacing 18 between the outer edge of one filter element and the inner edge of the adjacent filter element is produced by reducing the thickness of the rim of at least one of these elements at the appropriate outer or inner margin of the'rim and placing the filter elements in direct contact with each other. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the outer edge of the rim 15 of the smaller elements 16 is reduced as shown at 17, and in another embodiment the inner edge of the rim 13 of the larger elements 14 is reduced, but both said outer and inner edges could be reduced. Various forms of reduced rims -are shown. The apparatus is similar to that in Specification 575,167 with scraper or cleaning blades 10.
